I am sure money isn't much of an issue at this point because he has to prove himself healthy before he can make any real demands. I am sure he is all about finding the best fit for him to prove himself and eventually earn a bigger contract. If the Flyers really want him there's a good chance he signs with the Flyers since he likes it here.

You're not excited over the prospect of a goalie with a bum hip as our big deadline acquisition??

Well, the problem with Emery wasn't one of simple healing per se... it was well beyond it. His hip was literally rotting and dying -- same thing that ended Bo Jackson's career, I believe.

So... this isn't like coming back from a normal soft tissue injury.

I'd say give him several games down in the AHL. If he does well, sign him to a cheap 500K to 600K two-way contract to see how he does in the NHL.

I'd kind of like Emery back, but I think some people are thinking he's going to make it back to the NHL quickly provided he is healthy enough, I don't know if it will be that quick.

His 5 hole will be TERRIBLE when he's back in a wheelchair.

Can't hurt to give him a chance to prove himself with the Phantoms at this point.

I don't really want him back, but if he's sufficiently recovered enough to play well at the NHL level, he'd be okay on cheap contract.

The latest from Tim P.:

Quote:
As much as the Flyers wanted to re-sign goalie Ray Emery and put him somewhere in the organization, they don’t have room. The Flyers expect Emery will sign with Anaheim. Emery had been rehabbing from serious hip problems since the middle of last season and now wants to resume his career.

Decent goalie, but with his condition, will always be damaged goods.

This is what I'd LOVE to see happen right now between the Flyers and Emery. Sign him to an AHL only contract (as suggested by others and thus he CAN'T be claimed off waivers by anyone else) and let him work on the Phantoms for the rest of the year and get himself back in game shape (get his timing, etc). Tell him that we will have an NHL contract waiting for him come July 1st and sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal for between 750k to 1 mil (his choice on the years, 750k for 1 year 1 mil per if for 2 years). Next year we go with Ray and Bob in net. I can't think of a better situation from a Flyers POV. For Emery, maybe he could get into the NHL this season and maybe he could get more money from another team but apparently he liked his time here and we did give him a chance last year when nobody else would. By playing for us next year (and possibly the following year too if he wants) he gets to play in front of one of the leagues best defensives getting him some of the best support for showing he's fully back and worthy of a top end (or at least a 3-4 mil range) contract from either the Flyers or another team. He also should get to showcase his ability in the playoffs and providing he performs well, he'll look even MORE attractive when he goes to sign his next UFA contract.

You are exactly correct here. I don't know the exact extent of the injury but I remember them saying that this was exactly what ended Bo's career. Also, from what they were saying last year, there really haven't been much in the way of medical advances for this type of injury. It was still very likely that this injury was career ending for Emery. The proceedure may have been a success but it remains to be seen if he has the full ability to move as needed to play professionaly again.

If he does go to Anaheim, best of luck to him. I liked him when he was around.

Emery had an Interview yesterday with Ottawa's Team 1200:

Quote:
[...]

Last season with Philadelphia, however, it was a breakdown of his hip that caused his year to end prematurely. ”I took my body for granted. I didn’t do any of that stuff before (proper nutrition, body maintenance). You’ve got to take the lesson and make the most of it.”

Reports have suggested that Philadelphia and Anaheim are interested in giving Emery a look, but he didn’t bite on questions about who is interested. Emery would need to showcase his talents in the minors before he would get a serious look in the NHL again.

“I don’t have too many options, but I’m keeping my eyes open for teams that might need someone, teams where I think I can contribute. I realize I have to prove myself.”

I wish the Soul Tender nothing but the best. Hopefully he signs with Anaheim as is being reported and not the Flyers.

I am not sure if I would want him for this season. maybe he signs only for the rest of the season with someone like Anaheim and if he proves capable I would love to have him back next season. Could be cheap.
