If the Rangers plan on signing Richards on July 1,they will need every penny available in the summer cap. Wade Redden returns. Chris Drury's situation. 4 potential arbitration cases-Callahan,Dubinsky,Boyle and Sauer. 1 non arbitration case in Anisimov. Gilroy is also arbitration eligible. No bonus cushion next season. Redden hurts the flexibility in the summer cap and lack of a bonus cushion hurts the 11-12 cap.
The Rangers aren't trading for Souray. $2.7M off re-entry hurts their ability to sign Richards. They gained $1.2M in the Wolski trade. Souray has to clear re-entry waivers to play in the NHL.
Mark Spector did a story on Souray last week. Someone from the Hershey Bears PR staff tipped him off about Kevin Maxwell scouting the game. Scouts scout games. Or Souray's agent Paul Theofanous tipped off Spector to generate interest in his client. He wants Souray out of the AHL but can't do anything about it.
Souray would have to go through re-entry waivers, so no guarantee Rangers would get him.
Souray...meh. Not that interested. His cap hit next year would not be good at all to swallow if there are ambitions of getting Richards. At halfprice on reentry...???Better rental options out there imo...
Trading something like Gilroy, Drury, Wash 2nd to EDM for Souray + MPS (Omark?) would be a dream. But EDM would NEVER do this. So it is not an option either.
So I think this is not a good road to venture down - both as an ev trade (only assets we that could/should give up would be Drury and I really doubt he waives his NMC to the cold Canadian plains and/or EDM would accept what we want to dump on them) or on grabbing him on re-entry (which we probably will not be first team to sign SS anyway --- Hello Mr Snow...).
Drury or Redden for Souray. You can throw in Christensen, Eminger or Gilroy too to shed some salary. Other than that, no to Souray.
And if we're so desperate for a hard shot (which is all what Souray is essentially), why not go with a cheaper, younger option in Valentenko?
NMC aside, Drury makes more than Souray. It's unlikely Edmonton would unload Souray only to add to their payroll. Redden not only makes more as well, but he has multiple years beyond 2012. It doesn't make sense for the Oilers.
Valentenko may have a hard shot, but he's not a factor on the powerplay at all. I like him as a player, but he has all of 1 goal & 7 points playing regularly for the Whale in the AHL. How is that going to help the Rangers' powerplay? I don't want him for many reasons, but Souray at least has a history of scoring on the powerplay.
