NY will not trade for souray while he's in the minors. It's stupid, because they'd then have to call him up and hope he clears re-entry.
either pick him up off re-entry
see him clear re-entry and then trade big salary for him
wait till the offseason and trade for him, so he doesnt have to clear re-entry first.
Trade Drury for Souray, use Souray for the PO run, then dump him in the minors next season. NY basically pays the tab on him playing in the minors. Is that at all possible?

Not really. Souray wont be 'traded'. Trading him would mean NYR would have to put him on recall waivers before using him for the PO.
Only way Souray makes it to NYR is if they pick him up on recall waivers. Oilers get nothing for him and NYR pay 2.3M for his services next season.

Imagine if we brought on Drury and drafted RNH. In a couple years our two bottom C's (If things remained the same, for the sake of this) would be making 11 million dollars.
Redden is not getting traded for Souray unless it's an AHL to AHL deal, and I can't see any reason why edmonton would do that. And no, the Rangers aren't adding picks.
Any other scenario involving Redden would require the Rangers to place him on re-entry, which we absolutely will not do.
We also aren't claiming Souray on re-entry. He has 1 more year left on his contract and we can't afford to waste 2.7 mil on him next year. Even if he gets sent down, he'll still be on the summer cap (along with Redden) and impact our ability to sign our RFAs and potential FAs.
The only possible scenario for the Rangers would for edmonton to recall Souray, and then trade him for Drury. However, I can't see Drury waiving his NMC to go to edmonton, and I can't imagine that Sather would ask him to.
The media have been trying to trade Souray to the Rangers for 2 years now. It isn't happening.
I wasn't even trying to be mean about it, I was just wondering about the stupidity of the original report as to why they'd look at Souray when they have Redden.
I think the point that some people are missing here is that Souray was sent to the AHL because of his attitude and what he said on TV about Edmonton. I think if you read a lot of people will tell you his Skill level was NHL level. He's does have a great, hard and accurate shot (unlike Foster), and he does play tough in his own end. He has injury issues, mostly from fighting, but yes he does.
On a side note, what happened to Drury? He used to be a decent player. He's what 34? not super old yet.
This asset will be something ok, but not a 1st or anything so grand, because of the huge amount of actual cash owed to Redden.
The NYR can recall Souray on rentry and risk losing him for nothing and having to pay 1/2 his remaining salary which comes out as $750k for the remainder of this year and $2.25 million for next year for a total money cost of $3.0 million dollars. Redden will cost them $12.5 million dollars for the rest of the contract for a savings of $9.5 million dollars in REAL money, which is what this is really all about.
If somehow Souray makes it to the team then he can help the PP for the rest of this year and next year and the team still saves over $8.0 million dollars.
The Oil are getting the better player and can leave him in the minors for the year to protect his rights. They have him start at camp as one of the top 4 d-men next year and the year after as we start our way back to the playoffs. Redden is a very solid 2 way d-man that could really help the oils d-core going forward.

The NYR can recall Souray on rentry and risk losing him for nothing and having to pay 1/2 his remaining salary spread over twice as many years which comes out as $750k for the remainder of this year and $2.25 million for next year for a total money cost of $3.0 million dollars. We're the Rangers. Salary cap space is more important than actual salary.

The team can alway wait until the end of the year and buy out Sourays contract for
2/3 of the remaining $4.5 million spread over 2 years. This is a $1.12 million dollar cap hit for next year and the Year after which is a minor inconvienence to save $8.0 million dollar.

There is no motivation for the Oilers to acquire Wade Redden. This is not a question of "real money" cap hit is much more important to the Oilers when considering a long contract like Reddens. His 6.5M will be around when its time to resign Hall Eberle etc, Sourays will not.

That's Sportsnet for you though.
So was I. It makes no sense, unless Glen somehow sends them Drury straight up for him. I really think he's thinking of something bigger...maybe a Capitals prospect that Gordie likes? Idk.

Season Buyout Cap Hit
2011-2012 $2,400,000
2012-2013 $1,500,000
Salary is not an issue for either of these franchises.
Doesn't Drury have a NTC or NMC? Can't see him waiving it for edmonton
I'd love it but no way Drury waives his NMC to go to Edmonton, if he did, I'd have respect for the guy. Drury would be a good fit in Edmonton, they can use a vet and a PKer with the kids and he might be one of Renney's guys.

The way I understand it, Souray can be traded to another team and he can be assigned straight to their NHL team without passing through waivers. If he were traded to the Rangers and they assigned him to CT then recalled him, he'd have to pass through waivers, but if they place him straight in NY, there's no need to worry that the Islanders are going to try to claim him. Besides that, he makes more than league minimum so they're not going to claim him anyhow. An example of this is Mathieu Schneider and a few other players who didn't pass through re-entry waivers after being traded.

Redden is only contracted for 3 years including 10/11, so his contract will expire before Eberle and Hall come up for negotiation.
