I don't really care how big of a fan you are of Chara. If you expect a team to trade one of its best overall players then you should expect to pay a hefty price. Considering the Sharks need is a quality blue liner, then you should understand why Chara is the one that people here would be after when you're after Marleau. We're obviously ignoring the fact that he just re-signed with the team for four years which includes a no-movement clause. So if you expect to have a serious conversation about what it would take to get Patrick Marleau, you better start thinking of packages that would work where the B's are trading Chara the other way because there is no other way that anyone should be considering anything less.
And if you're not expecting a serious conversation, we might as well just close down the thread now.

Everytime some asks about our players in trade and we respond with "we need your top-4 defensemen" we get laughed at. Why don't people get that the only thing we need is a top-4 defensemen better than the ones we already have, so if we are making a trade, that's what we want.
"Hey, we want one of your best players and we're willing to trade. But you can't have any of our best players or our good prospects or anything like that."
you're not trading a bunch of scraps and minor pieces for a good player unless Doug wilson gets fired tomorrow and replaced with Mike O'Connell.

I disagree. There are several other gms that we could replace DW with that would make a horrible trade like that. Sutter for example.
And none of them, with the lone exception being Chara, come anywhere near the value of Patrick Marleau. The B's don't have the assets to make up for the humongous value gap between the other three and Marleau and that includes Seguin or Toronto's 1st.

Sutter makes dumb FA signings, not beyond-stupid trades. The list of GMs that make a stupid Marleau trade is probably
O'Connell
Milbury
Keenan (provided the other team give him one of the pieces he's infatuated with, like Todd Bertuzzi)
EDIT: I love Denis Seidenberg and think he would be good for the Sharks, but he's not nearly enough value for Marleau. It would probably have to be something like Seidenberg & Toronto's 1st and a prospect or two that's not Seguin or Joe Colbourne (I'd take Craig Cunningham +)

Me too. To add to your quote:
"Hey, we want one of your best players and we're willing to trade. But you can't have any of our best players or our good prospects or anything like that. I'll then directly/indirectly insult your player's value even though I was the one who wanted to trade for him in the first place."
