EDIT: hahah I found the video...

Thanks for posting that, much appreciated lol.

And in no way should Conroy's jersey be retired. His numbers are no were close to deserve such an honour. Conroy was a great player and great all around guy, but even he would laugh at that suggestion. Mostly that honour only goes to guys that will make the Hall of Fame or close to it.

Well...

Lanny McDonald- 8 seasons with the Flames. In the Hall of Fame. Number retired.

Mike Vernon- 13 seasons with the Flames. Not in the hall of fame. Number retired.

So...for the Flames at least, it looks like you can argue either way about the Hall criteria. I mean, we look at the other two guys that should be retired...

Al MacInnis- 12 seasons with the Flames. In the Hall of Fame. Number retired by the St. Louis Blues. Left Calgary because of a contract dispute.

Theoren Fleury- 11 seasons with the Flames. Not in the Hall of Fame. Left Calgary because of a contract dispute as well as being an absolute side-show off the ice. Recently clean.

I'm saying Conroy's 10 seasons with the team put him in that gray zone where you could argue that he should be retired. It would be a sentimental thing, a la Ken Daneyko more than anything else. In a way, it is the same kind of question as asking if Regehr should have his number retired when his career is finished. Was wholly unremarkable on the ice, but has to date been entirely steadfast in his loyalty and representation of both the city and the organization.

If I remember correctly, Connie was the number 22 during his first tenure, and 24 after he came back from LA. Which number would we retire lol?

There really is no argument IMO as to whether or not the Flames should retire his jersey. The Flames honoured Conroy today by giving him a prestiged position with the Flames management. I think MacInnis and Nieuwy do not have their numbers retired only for the reason that they are employed by other teams. And I think Roberts, Gilmour and Fleury are all miles ahead of Conroy in the discussion. Regehr would also be ahead of Conroy, and I still never think we will ever live to see the day where his jersey goes up in the rafters. The only current Flames who I think will go up is Iggy for sure and possibly Kipper.

Calgary boy, could have been the Conn Smythe winner in '89

The Flames have said they will not retire the number of a player working for another organization... it would be retired if he wasn't working for the Blues

Fleury paved the way for his # to be retired but his comments after being cut maybe have cost him that opportunity, but they couldn't retire his number until last season as he wasn't officially retired

if you retire Conroy's number you have to retire Pepper's number... and Otto's... etc. the flames have done an excellent job in making sure they don't retire numbers for the sake of retiring them... I love Conroy, he is my fave player of all time... but he has not earned a number retirement

I made the naive and foolish mistake of mentioning potentially retiring his number a while back. The general consensus was some sort of plaque or picture or something somewhere in the Dome.

Conroy will act as an assistant to GM Feaster. Our new GM in the making?

They should put #24 in the rafters. 10 Seasons, former captain and one of the most beloved players in franchise history, that's enough reason to retire his number.
We should just have a wall of honour at the new stadium instead for these awesome players that aren't good enough to retire the numbers.

Conroy was one of my favorite players through the years. Glad a guy like him has a place where he's truly appreciated. Almost always traded for him in my EA Years.

I agreed. If team retires people like Conroy....there is no number left for the current players.

PS: I am not ditching Conroy. He was a good valuable player for the team but he rode Iginla's coat tail for most of his success here. A good foot solder that should get some credit but he is not a hockey god.
