I don't think they should, salary was not the problem in this case. Smith has struggled with injuries and isn't the same player anymore. He had an AHL conditioning stint and his numbers were horrible. I can't say for sure how he would look behind Detroit's (brickwall) defense *cough*, but I would feel more comfortable with Joey Mac for now and it appears most feel the same way. Emery is probably a better option than Smith.

Are you hoping for a deadline acquisition?

No, bottom line, I just don't think he's good enough to bring to Detroit. I also don't think we'll see him on re-entry waivers anyway, he's going to be in the A for the rest of the season.

you are too right sir. smith is from the same town as me and ive even met him as well as his parents a few times. i honestly dont see him being a DRW type of person. i really like the guy, but his injuries have taken a huge toll(on his play) and i would not enjoy seeing him in a wings uni.

as harsh as it sounds, i dont think he will ever have a starting job in the nhl again.

I remember watching Mike Smith before he was traded to Dallas, and man was he ever phenomenal. I honestly thought this guy would be a stud. I know for sure that the trade took him by surprise and he did get very emotionally (cried) about it. I don't blame him, he loved that team and it seemed like he was just a piece of meat.

I personally believe that Mike Smith was doomed in Tampa, regardless of how good of a team was in front of him. I believe that this was going to be the case just because of the fan-base in Tampa being different in Dallas than it was in Tampa at the time (one team was on the cusp of the SCF until Detroit smashed that, the other was sputtering), and let's face it, fanbases usually hold players accountable. No one wants to be the guy with a 10 page thread full of "he sucks" posts, on a very popular hockey forum at that.

I think he should be given a chance, and since we got screwed by Viggo Mortensen-on-drugs (aka Garth Snow, who was "looking out for his team's best interests"), why shouldn't we give him a chance?

Was Mike Smith not projected to be a stud? Wasn't he supposed to be a good goalie? I'm not disputing that injuries and poor play haven't helped his case (hence being waived), but maybe the right locker room is all he needs?

If it's not detroit, I hope it's somewhere else. I want to see him succeed.

The Wings need a proven playoff goalie. That's not Smith. It's really too bad the waiver wire screwed with Detroit's plans to sign Nabakov. He would have been perfect and he gave the Wings a sweetheart deal.
