Simon Gagne to Pittsburgh

It's my understanding that Gagne is a free agent after this season. Pens have the room to take his cap and he's stuggled a lot in Tampa.

What would it cost to get him in Pittsburgh for the remainder of this season?

TB is not going to trade him away to Pitts when he is starting to come into his own and then might have to face him in the playoffs.

He's not struggling anymore so I doubt he is available. Maybe as a UFA but why would the Lightning sell off a player?

If I ever see Simon Gagne in a Penguins uniform, I will set myself on fire.

Tampa wouldn't want to try to get some defensive depth for a playoff run with that contract of his?

There are two teams I see him waiving his NTC for.
The Flyers- Do I need to explain?
The Avs- Peter Forsberg

Gagne is finally finding some chemistry with Lecavalier and Purcell and he's been putting up good numbers lately. He won't be going anywhere.

I don't think Gagne would waive his NTC to go to Pittsburgh.

Gagne: 3 goals and 4 assists in his last 4 games
Purcell: 4 goals and 5 assists in the last 4 games
Lecavalier: 3 assists in the last 4 games

Their line is really clicking as of late. Coach Boucher stated he has two first lines right now. I don't see Yzerman breaking them up now that they finally have some chemistry going after all those games Gagne and Lecavalier had to sit out due to injuries. Also, Gagne will be even more important come playoffs. One word: clutch.

Of course we would. That's what prospects and draft picks are for. Not Top six wingers.

This is kinda off topic.. but what are the chances of tampa signing him in the offseason. ( with stammer needed to be resigned and Hedman next year) ?

Well, as he explicitly waived his NTC for Tampa I'd say the chances aren't too bad. If Yzerman still wants him after this season it would be for a lot less than his current $5.25 million. Mike Smith ($2.2 million) will be off the books, Stammer's cap hit is already at $3.75 million and we currently still have ~$10 million in cap space with an owner who's willing to let Yzerman spend to the cap if necessary.

I'd say 60-40 he re-signs. I would imagine priority is trying to sell Richards on playing with Lecavalier and Boucher, plus he still keeps a condo here next to Lecavalier. If he signs somewhere else the odds of keeping Gagne would go up.
