Where do you see in my proposal that Pitts are mortgaging their future? Are you talking about a 27-30th pick in a deep or weak draft (still not sure about that one)?
If it's weak, that 27pick is no big deal, if it's deep, you are getting a 62-63 back.
with Malkin done for the year and no return date for Crosby their is no guarantee that pick is 27-30th.
Penner does not have value for a potential number 1 D
And where in my post did I say he had the value straight up one for one? All I said was unless the prospect coming back is a number one potential the Oilers aren't interested...not that they wouldn't negotiate for one.
Penner plus our 2nd or med-high prospect (3-4 d-man or such) depending on the team needs. Realistically Hemsky would be the one to go.
No I disagree, Edmonton does need a defensive prospect and has no need for a 27 year old. If you get a 27 year old D man he is on his way out by the time the teams 19,20 year olds are at their prime.
As for the trade proposal, it would all hinge on what 'prospect' you are talking about.
It's HF, I'm not surprised people would disagree. Prospects are exciting but sometimes you need the sure thing, even if it's more limited in what they can deliver.
Here's is a question though, can anyone name a team that either won the cup or even emerged out of the darkness with out a couple legitimate veteran players?
The Oilers are woefully short on NHL experience and leadership, someone has to teach these kids about competing every day, handling the ebb and flow of the NHL season and so on.
If you can get a 27 y/o (just a ball park) defenceman then he is 33 or 34 by the time the so called uber-propects reach their competitive wheel houses. That works for me.
Hell if Penner displayed a heartbeat I would be happy to see the Oilers keep him for exactly the same reasons but he doesn't so I take no exception with moving him down the road and trading him for less talent but a more drive.

Why would you need a top 2 D when all you have to do is pick Larsson.
And which GM would be stupid enough to trade a potential number 1 D? those are keepers my friend.
Not a chance. We're not giving up two first rounders for Penner.
Technically you're right but in the end, you would be exchanging D prospects, Wiercioch / Despres (a 30th and a 42nd) and is it's a weak, you should not care or if it's adeep draft you are getting a high 3rd pick in return, you should not care either.
All this for 2 right winger rental.
Like Wej20 and Laufer72 said, it would be more a question of evaluating the risk of going at least 2 round deep in the playoff.

All high end players are keepers but sometimes you have to bite the bullet to win the cup. For example Atlanta and Edmonton could be good partners if they want to push for the Playoffs. Bogosian plus salary dump for Hemsky or Penner and Smid.
Sometimes you roll the dice and it pays off lol. Look at Dallas/Calgary with Iginla. win win I'd say.
From Edm pov if we can trade for a number one d-man without costing too much of our future we can draft a potential number one C in RNH or Couturier. Potentially fill two gaps in the rebuild instead of only one this year.
If Crosby isn't going to be back (hopefully they'll know by the deadline) I see no point in wasting assets for rentals. Unless we're bringing in someone like Brad Richards (which isn't happening), I can't see us having a real shot. No selling or tanking, but just stand pat.
Not interested in Penner. Definitely interested in Kovalev, and I've found its difficult dealing with Edmonton fans on here, so there are other, more interesting players I would rather have.
If Edmonton were to trade Penner to the Penguins in a package that involved a defensive prospect... Depres(sp?) name would be in that transaction. Not saying that the Penguins don't have a reason to gripe about it... that's just the cold hard fact of the matter.

I imagine Pens would offer 1st and a lesser defensive prospect. If it's Despres then it's straight up but I doubt Shero would pull the trigger.
BS first of all they wouldnt give up a firstround draft pick unless they were getting someone supergood. and they wouldnt give up our top prospect Depres.
If this thread would have been posted a month earlier Kovalev for a 7th rounder would be a good deal for Ottawa. But Kovalev played solid the last few games so i think Murray can get more for him. Maybe a 3rd rounder?
