These boards undervalue almost every player they discuss. Komi could easily garner a 2nd and a mid range prospect. That's a very low price defensmen in all seriousness.
The boards can underate players but Komi is not one of them. He's a terrible dman plain and simple and couldn't easily bring a 2nd let alone that and a decent prospect. Unless there is an even bigger cap dump coming the other way.
oh wait, its JR....reclamation projects are his forte. not that they all work out, but see Jokinen for one example of a good one. not saying thats what Komi could turn into but.....
that being said, the only way i see this happening is if the Canes shed another salary. Pitkanen most likely isnt going anywhere. If we can shed Samsonov's salary (2.8mil real dollars, 2.533 cap hit) that still means we are adding about 2.7mil real dollars to the payroll if we dont she some more salary. And the canes are way more focused on real dollars at this point. If the Canes trade Pitkanen for only prospects and picks, then maybe it makes sense. But that is a SEVERE downgrade on defense, and moving into the playoffs that will not be a good idea. Komi would be the #4 d-man here tops, most likely bottom pairing, making Harrison the #7 d-man if Pitkanen isnt traded. And there is no way JR is dumb enough to give up a 2nd AND a prospect for a bottom pairing d-man.
This is just speculation based on a Canes blogger who thinks its worth pursuing. Considering that Carolina isn't the most attractive place for UFAs, and that he'd fit nicely in a top 4 with Pitkanen, Corvo & Gleason, it makes some sense. The problem is of course that it would be an expensive top 4.
From this year's perspective, it would problably require them to ditch Samsonov to the Leafs, and move White at the deadline (they'll get a pretty good return on him). Next year would be the bigger issue, as they don't have a ton of money committed, but also don't have many players signed. Assuming Pitkanen costs $5.5m, that's $17.75m in real dollars to 5 defencemen (McBain as the #5). The last 2 years are much more attractive though, with Komi only making $3.5 in each.
