Thorne and Clement were good but ESPN treated hockey like an unwanted guest. They were nice but didn't care. VS has hockey as its #1 item. They added a highlight show (kind of like On the Fly) and have added some later games and replays. I don't know how NBC will change this, but ESPN has pro and college, baseball, football, basketball, cheerleading, football, poker, and SportsCenter all ahead of hockey. (yeah I know I said football twice, but they talk about it all off season as well). Sure not everybody gets VS -they should move. I remember at the break going to highlights of basketball games on ESPN and missing the start of the next period.

But yeah, that's a pretty wild overhaul. I actually like most of the crew...I realize I'm in the minority, but I hate it when some of these personalities disappear.

I really miss ESPN's old playoff commercials.

Remember the one where the kid was getting bullied and was about to fight back and it cut to "This is what playoff hockey feels like"

Good points but it took VS 5 years to finally get a nightly wrap up show.
But they have it now. Versus' "NHL Overtime" runs circles around the final few years of NHL2nite on ESPN.

Ok, ok, the ESPN hockey commercials are ONE thing I've missed about ESPN. This one is classic!

Other than that, not much to miss - except for college basketball, tennis, golf and poker highlights during the period intermissions.

They'll find a way of running a bunch of 30 on 30's for guys like the 3rd string right guard of the Carolina Panthers.

If I were Luc Robitaille or FSN I'd be on the phone to Bob Harwood right now offering him a job. Bob Harwood >>> Patrick O'Neal (or Heidi Androl for that matter).

Some Canadians must be thrilled that we've taken Pierre McGuire off of their hands from TSN broadcasts. Oy. That's a lot of Pierre.
I'm not sure that Versus has. TSN doesn't broadcast games Tuesday nights as a rule. Generally, they simulcast the Versus game on TSN2. So us Canadians actually get more Pierre McGuire, not less.

This isn't the first time he has racked up frequent flyer miles doing US and TSN broadcasts. During the 2010 World Juniors in Saskatoon, he was flown on NBC's private jet from Saskatoon to Boston to do the Winter Classic. It would be impossible for him to do it otherwise, since flights out of Saskatoon only go once a day and the farthest East commercial airlines go in the US is Chicago. Must be nice to command that much respect from a network they'd send the Ted Danza plane (Seinfeld reference) to pick you up and take you back.

Holy crap... Bill Pidto is back! NHL Overtime on Versus. Older-timers will remember him from hosting NHL2Nite on ESPN when it came on the air.

Great move.

Pidto has been on Versus a few times, I think filling in for Bill Patrick.

If Versus changes it's name to "NBC Sports Network" or something like that and can make a play for some NFL or college football they can get their name out there a lot more.

He's been on the show prior to tonight. They seemed to be switching hosts for the first few months because I think I've seen at least 3 different hosts.

Ahh cool... first time I've seen him. Deb Placey was supposed to host tonight, so apparenty Deb got the axe as well. I assumed Pidto was brought on to replace her, but he may just be filling in.

NBC has said they're going to change the name of the Versus network. "Ebersol also indicated that the company would change the Versus name to some variation reflecting the NBC brand, but he said the change was months away." http://puckthemedia.wordpress.com/20...s-months-away/

Was Deb the lady that cried on air when a Yankee player retired? I'm forgetting who it was.

Sorry, Suzyn Waldman was the perp.

Exactly! I wasn't in favor of hockey going over to the OLN(now VS) network, but ESPN sucked mad NADS now that I think about it.

imo they already were long ago. virtually nothing from the western conference west of chicago/detoilet. western teams usually only are on Vs when they travel to the eastern conference.

unfortunately the love affair, over the top coverage of Crosby/Ovi will be greater than it was before.

+1 for bringing back Thorne/Clement as the main broadcast team. i like the idea of using the home team's broadcasters. yeah some of bad, some are homers, but i like hearing the difference in styles and personalities.

Take a shot everytime Emrick says "waffleboarded" during a broadcast.

Guaranteed to be wasted.

Thorne is calling Baltimore Orioles games nowadays, so it might be tough to convince him to leave baseball for NHL playoff broadcasts. He still does some freelancing like the NCAA Frozen Four games on ESPN.

Do miss the silly ESPN black and white commercials for hockey.

Wouldn't mind the NHL doing weekly games on VS and ESPN with the new TV contract, much like how the NBA splits it between TNT/ESPN.
