Both teams did okay here. The Ducks (who are currently a playoff team) needed to solidify their blueline and the Leafs are looking to fill the cupboard while inching closer to a playoff spot of their own. Gardiner is a very good prospect. I would expect Burke to try to pry another d-man loose from someone looking to cut salary.

No, because Beauchemin isn't a rental.

This is true. He had some serious problems playing in Edmonton because the fans had such high expectations. Hopefully it works out for him in Toronto though, because I liked the guy. Go easy on him Toronto fans!

There are a few teams in the NHL who would consider Gardiner their top D-man prospect if they owned his rights. Have you seen him play this season? His skating is great, his play in his own zone has improved in leaps and bounds, and he is putting up PPG. He is definitely better than a middle of the road prospect.

Lupul? Really, Burke?

Gardiner + 4th makes this a nice return though. Beauchemin has been truly awful with Toronto, hopefully he can find his game back with Anaheim.

who takes Beauchemins place? Aulie or *shudder*, Lebda?
Gunnarsson should be in Beauch's permanent spot. Lebda will probably be on the roster permanently. Yikes. I do hope Aulie gets called up though.

That's essentially 2 1st rounders that Leafs got. Everyone on this board said we won't get even close to this.
If you're going to apply that logic to the trade, why not just sign Patrik Stefan? He went first overall!

This is a pretty decent trade for the Leafs, mainly because of Gardiner...but who knows what, if anything, he'll become. Lupul is pretty meh and the 4th is the 4th.

Beauchemin is competent enough and has been to the dance before, so I'm sure the Ducks know what they're getting. Not bad for both, really.

I almost feel like there is something missing from the Leafs end that didn't get reported... Good deal for the Leafs. Been a while since I could say that.

Classic HF reaction... whoever gets the best prospect wins the deal...

But it's a good trade for both sides. Ducks get a guy back who has won it with them before, and while they give up a good prospect Lupul with his injury has been on the path to spare part so he gets a chance to ignite his offense again with the Leafs.

Not to mention, since Beauchemin has time left on his contract, the Ducks get a long term asset, whereas Gardiner could be deemed expendable especially with Fowler and Sbisa looking like future studs for them.

Of course, the Leafs lose a minute munching defenseman...

To all who think TOR won this one. You must not have followed Lupul much. Kid makes Schremp look like Mark Messier.

Not really bad for both sides...

Not sure Lupul will come back to his previous form, but Gardiner is an interesting piece to get.

Beauchemin is solid. I'll miss him!

Welcome to Toronto Lupul, and Gardiner!!
When Lupul has injury problems and a 4.25 long term contract, he isn't considered equivalent to a first rounder. It doesn't work that way.

IMO the Ducks got hosed. Gardiner is going to be a stud. What are they going to do next year when Selanne retires...and wtf are they going to do this year to get more secondary scoring?

Either way, the Leafs get a solid prospect, a 4th, and someone who can score a few goals. He is a definite upgrade over Joey Crabb.

I love how everyone always says team X won this trade. Both teams can come out winners in a trade. The Ducks get a solid second pairing d-man who can play a lot of minutes who shores up their D and is also under contract for another year. They also DUMP Lupul's contract (4.5 for two years) which is a lot for a guy who has had major injury issues this year and the last. The Leafs get a guy who IF he can stay healthy can play in the top 6 and should be able to pot 20ish goals and a quality offensive d-man prospect. Solid trade for both teams.

I prefer to call it the Tom Pyatt deal, as to this point, he's the best player out of the whole deal.
