On Salo?

He's one of those guys Ive rarely seen any negative criticism about in the last 3+ seasons. I guess people complain about his injury history, but I really haven't seen anyone complain about his play.

And if we were forced to make a move to re-activate him...if not for the injuries to Edler and Ballard I would suggest this would be the most prudent course of action too.

When did anyone ever turn on Salo?

When he's healthy or even 80% he is a very effective player for us.

This is great news, only one game with 3 top 4 D's.

I guess Salo's gonna be playing Alberts and Ehrhoff with Rome. Bowness seems to like balancing the D lines so that there is atleast one Top 4 one every line. And he has seemed to like Ehrhoff and Rome as a paring aswell if I'm not mistaken.

That's because he's never in the line up long enough to warrant criticism.

You can't waive a player on LTIR so we'd need to make cap space, bring him into the lineup and then waive him.

Plus, sitting on LTIR until playoffs and whatnot.

Hah! If you look back not even very long ago people were looking to dump him for a sack of pucks (cap space.) People do turn on him and don't appreciate Salo. We only love our players when they are out. Why is Salo not expected to injure himself again immediately after coming back? Is he suddenly not injury prone? *If* that's our fans' only reason for bashing him lol. Again, absence makes the heart grow fonder just like for Willie Mitchell during his concussion he was suddenly our best defenseman but now no one would even think about taking him back on our core after he chose to sign with the LA kings (for that price sure, but if he was our best defenseman why wouldn't you?)

No one called him (Salo) a first pairing defenseman/our best defenseman until right about when he was injured in the summer... I will dig up threads from before then if you all have such short term memories.

I'm glad he's back but there's no telling he doesn't drop again and I'm okay with that.

People have been calling Salo our best defenceman for years. Injured or not.

Just like Willie Mitchell was our best defenseman... except only for the duration of his concussion. I will have to dig up some threads later on.

Thank gawd. With Salo not around to absorb the wrath of the hockey gods, they've been slaughtering our poor innocent sheep. Hopefully Salo can be our magic talsiman and absorb the blkack karma that hovers over this team's blueline.

Yeah I don't recall a lot of Salo criticism. He's a guy the coaching staff puts a lot of value on (he'll be playing 20 minutes within 4-5 games), plays an unassuming game and wires slapshots. He's appreciated more than most Canucks have been.

Happy to have him back. Seems pointless to say, but hopefully he can stay healthy. Could be a big boost and replace what has been missing since Edler has been out (PP point presence).

The trouble with Salo is that he's such a good player, that the Canucks tend to rely pretty heavily on him when he's in the line-up, and then when he invariably goes down injured, he leaves a pretty big hole in your blue line.

Perhaps the fact they've played without him this deep into the season will help, but even if he's playing well, you simply can't rely on him to play a significant role in the playoffs - he's going to get hurt again. It's just a matter of time.

I've never been anti-Salo, but I always wanted to keep Bieksa over him in the off-season. I also think that Salo is good, but that Edler this season was playing at a higher level than Salo is capable of.

Given our current situation, I'm very happy to have Salo back and hopefully he can be healthy and effective down the stretch and into the playoffs.

That's not true. Desbiens was waived and demoted while still on LTIR. Also, in an intermission interview with Dan Murphy a few weeks ago, Gilman explicitly said that players on LTIR can be moved without activating them. I'm not sure where everyone's getting the idea that it's any different.

Because there's a very good chance he'll be very rusty. Look at how quickly people turned on Ballard earlier this year.

I see what the "when will people turn on Salo?" people are saying. We've had people advocating waiving/dumping Salo, Ballard, Torres, Malhotra, Raymond, etc. all season long. Basically if a player struggles for a few games, we have some fans(not all--but a vocal few) who are lining up to trade them for a used jock strop from Cyclone Taylor's.

And do not forget fire Alain Vigneault and trade Luongo to make Schneider the Number 1.

I'm hoping karma pays Salo back this year for, well, everything he's been through.

The guy is a trooper, and has my complete respect. How many people would just lay down their career after that many injuries?

I'm not expecting him to look like his old self any sooner than next month. There might be glimpses of it, but he was slow to get back into form the last time he was out, and that wasn't anywhere near as long as this time.

i'll believe that salo can stay healthy for the playoffs when i see it

there is no reason to believe he won't sustain another groin/shoulder/knee/ankle/[insert body part here] injury at some point down the stretch drive

however, he is an ideal replacement for ballard and edler for the next few months

Was Salo injured or playing injured in either or both of the Canucks playoff series against Chicago?
