SI Bobrovsky Article

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...1771/index.htm

There's a pretty good article out on Bob in Sports Illustrated this week by Michael Farber.

He starts by pointing out the Flyer's depth at forward and defense, but mentions the perennial difficulty in net.

Quote:
There are black holes in every sport into which championships vanish, positions that year to year, even decade to decade, elude filling. Bears quarterback. Mavericks center. Mets rightfielder. Flyers goaltender.
Farber then introduces Bob and familiarizes the reader with his personal history and how he joined the team. Here's a snippet I enjoyed.

Quote:
To borrow a Russian phrase, the 22-year-old undrafted rookie, plucked from the Kontinental Hockey League last May, has been like snow on the head - something unexpected. Instead of starting in the minors, he grabbed a job made available by Leighton's preseason back surgery and, well, Bob's your uncle.
Of course no national article about Flyers goaltender is complete before they mention the 3 biggest names in Flyers goalie history.

Quote:
To summarize: Bobrovsky - or any of the other 18 Flyers goalies since the 1996-97 Cup run, when Hextall split duties with Garth Snow - must play against the holy trinity, the figurative ghosts of Parent and Hextall and the literal ghost of Lindbergh.
Clarke was interviewed for this piece and gave a good comment on one of the other 18 as they were being discussed, Roman Cechmanek.

Quote:
He was an outstanding goalie... He just s--- the bed in the playoffs. He wanted to go home to [the Czech Republic]. He had no commitment to winning the Stanley Cup.
Farber goes on to comment on the history between Clarke and the Flyers when it comes to Russians. Clarke again commented.

Quote:
We've never been prejudiced against any country. When I played against them, I didn't like them. But I didn't like a lot of teams. Nothing personal.
Bob commented on his Russian heritage and how it relates to the Flyers organization.

Quote:
Personally, as a Russian, I feel no pressure. No matter what nationality you are, if you stop the puck, you stay with the team.
And lastly, some Flyers weighed in on Bob's future

Prongs:
Quote:
After 30-some games, it's a little premature to start labeling him the next Pelle Lindbergh. He needs to form his own identity. And he's starting to do that. He's certainly getting a loyal Bob following.
Briere:
Quote:
Personally, I think he's the guy. He has the talent to be something special. It's tough to tell with goalies because so many things come into play with their minds, but he seems like he's in the right place.
So yeah, I thought it was a nice piece and a good quick read. It didn't bring a whole lot of new things to the table in terms of info on Bob, but since it's meant to be an article to be read nationwide it's going to cover a lot of info that fans of that specific player/team - in this case Bob - would already know. It also had a couple nice pics of Bob, one in his game against the Blackhawks and one in the Nov 4th game against the Rags.

Anywho. I think I followed the site rules in posting about articles, I'm still kinda new to it. Obviously if I didn't, the mods know what to do

Thanks for the help with the link. I checked SI.com's NHL page and searched a bit, didn't find it myself. I'm guessing they kept it off the NHL page intentionally since it's in the vault and dated it February 14th.

I think calling Pelle Lindbergh a "literal ghost" seems to be a little inappropriate.

When taken out of context like that, yes it does.

Eh, it was kinda ******** though. He put the team on his back, only to have them jump off. Granted, the guy was an *******.

what's the cold hard assumption on Bobrovsky guys. is he 'the guy', your goalie of the future or at least your starter next year or is he just the guy right now and if you lose in the playoffs he's gonna be the next Michael Leighton in your system.

Cold hard assumption?

That's a bit like asking us if we are all in agreement about tomorrow's powerball numbers. Even if we were, it's not worth that much. We all tend to agree he is a talent that is willing to work his ass off. That should keep him in the fold here for a good while.

There is a world of difference between Leighton and Bob. Comparing the two doesn't work.
