Well, the team didn't want Hamhuis to drive home and called in his wife.

Sit him a few games no matter what.

+1

Should just keep him at home for the road trip. Return 19th vs. Stars. 10 days off should be good enough.

A forward could float around and probably avoid getting knocked in the head again but a top pairing guy like Hamhuis needs to be 100% ready for contact otherwise I think there's a good chance we'll see a recurrence. Then again, Bent Seabrook got knocked out badly last season by Wisniewski and barely missed any playing time, if that. I guess we'll just have to see but I don't think we should read too much into how Hamhuis feels immediately after the game.
Quite often though it seems like these are situations like Mitchell last year, or Crosby this year. They take a hit to the head and they are fine, not a big deal. Then a game or two later they take a harder hit to the head, and they're out long term.

The best thing for Hamhuis is to keep him out of the line-up even if he is "okay". I'd sit him Saturday, and maybe even leave him off the next 3 game road trip. If he doesn't feel in post concussion syndromes after that period of time, he'll be fine. In this case, it's all about not taking chances.

Exactly. This argument should be the rule when dealing with concussions these days, seems like the second one is the killer.

Listening to Team 1040 this noon arguing with a caller that Getzlaf didn't jump was a bit much.

* Does Getzlaf levitate around the ice? That could explain why one camera angle has him in the air after the hit - he's in the air all the time.

Otherwise, from what I learned, when you jump the starting point is the ground (or ice in this case), you go up in the air momentarily, and then you land.

Or perhaps he jumped after to celebrate his hit on Hamhuis?

Difference with Hamhuis would be that unless he is experiencing some soreness and such in his head and neck, it would not be the same situation that Mitchell and Crosby were in. They should have learned from their mistakes, and that's probably why they have Hamhuis sitting on Saturday.

No one is sitting for sure yet. We'll know tomorrow. Good thing the team doesn't play until Saturday and is staying home.

fortunately the canucks have put enough cushion between themselves and the rest of the west that they can be patient with injuries

with concussions, any injury speculation is pure guesswork...ie: crosby has no history of concussions and yet is out for the year

A player like Dan H who has never had a concussion before won't recognize symptoms.Do the smart thing Canucks and don't ask him.Just sit him

Hamhuis is a no show at the Canuck event dice and ice. Should get update tomorrow but it doesn't look good.
The last bit is speculation.

Doesn't look good as in Hamhuis won't be in the lineup or what I dread...?

“He’ll come in tomorrow with the rest of the guys and be re-evaluated,” said Gilman. “Dan’s obviously a very important part of our team and we’re going to take whatever steps necessary to ensure that’s he’s as healthy as possible.”

Several Canucks at the fundraiser said they spoke with Hamhuis after the game and he seemed fine — which, of course, means little where a possible concussion is concerned.

“I don’t know how serious it is,” said Bieksa, who’s having his best NHL season playing alongside Hamhuis. “He said he was feeling good today, but there’s obviously a lot of protocols that go along with concussions. We hope that it’s a week or even shorter. We’ve developed a good chemistry, but different guys will step up, as they have all season long.”

Bieksa's best NHL season to date was 06-07, he was doing everything he has this year - with 42 points.

Gary Valk can be a bit of a tool sometimes. His doom and gloom are countered by Bieksa's comments about him being out for a week or less - based on what they saw so far. I know concussions can rear their head days afterwards, but cmon, chill out Valk.

Off thread topic a big, how long is Sportsnet going to run with Valk after the games? Listening to him yammer his way through his comments is maddening. He is like Steve Ludzig, only hotter.

Best season offensively maybe. He wasn't this good defensively, which is why everyone is surprised I think.

Not a big surprise.

While a player can sustain a concussion without being knocked out, if a player is knocked out you can pretty much bank on a concussion.

Pretty much this.

I kind of have to disagree with Valk on Hammer not being able to recognize the symptoms. Maybe if it isn't that serious I'd agree, but every time I've gotten one, even the first small one, I knew something wasn't right.
