Murray names Spezza as first untouchable

Bryan Murray as on CBC during the intermission and when asked who our untouchables were, the first thing he said was that Spezza is someone they 'really don't want to trade'.
Can this put the speculation to rest?

He did not call Spezza "untouchable". He said, he would like to keep Spezza moving forward. The only player he named as a "fixture", who was "not going anywhere", was Alffredson.

Well of course Spezza is untouchable. Hes their #1 centre and the sens dont have any top centreman on the farm and alfy will be retiring soon.

They asked Murray for his Untouchables and he started with Karlsson and Spezza, then he said Alfredsson also was a fixture.

Untradeable?

You mean untradable as in we couldn't get a major return for him? Or do you actually mean he's untradable?

If it's the latter, most players on losing teams are untradable.

Agreed. It means they won't trade him unless they get a clear overpayment that not only provides a sure-thing replacement for Spezza, but also helps us in other areas for the future.

But that doesn't tell us anything new, unless you bought into the "super secret feud between Spezza and Murray" hype.

Which is consistent with what he said on air on January 24th (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Team12...50408593240585 - at about the 13 minute mark). He only ever mentioned Alfie, and we all presumed the other was Karlsson. Spezza is a fixture because he has a no trade and right now nobody to play with so his value can't really go up and with his contract it needs to.

During a rebuild it's always important to hold onto an expensive underperforming player.

This is Murray's last year in Ottawa, book it

this is what i read out of it. which is...exactly what i thought the reasonable consensus was beforehand anyway?

there's still that slight chance though, and if you leave the door open a crack...a lot of fans are going to come barging through and blow it wide open.

to me, Columbus is the only team i can think of that has both the realistic need for a player like Spezza AND actually has anything close to the assets to pull it off. and it doesn't seem at all likely, as it would take a significant overpayment, and that sort of big ballsy move is really not Howson's MO.

I don't think Spezza has much value right now anyhow. Not many want the underachieving 7+ million dollar version.

Untouchable - un-trade-able if he keeps this poor play up.

Unless Gaborik, Burns or some other ridiculous offer is made. I cannot imagine Spezza being traded. I do believe Ottawa should move Alfy though. He could net a fairly decent return from a cup contender like Detroit, San Jose or maybe even Vancouver or Chicago. I significantly doubt the latter two but hey, stranger things have happened.

I would think that Alfie would have a say in whether he would like to be moved to a contender or not. In my mind it would be better for both parties if they were to part ways.

Ott could get a at least 1st and a few young roster players for him, and he would get a chance to win immediately, something that is very tough for a 35 + player on a rebuilding team.

Spezza would be an ideal fit in CBJ, for Brassard + , as ott would get cap relief and Nash would get a legit 1st line centre for the first time in his career.

Why put any speculation to rest. You said yourself that Murray said ,
Spezza is someone they REALLY DON'T want to trade'.
i see nothing mentioned of Spezza being untouchable or nothing stating that Spezza will not be traded.

That may be some what true but i would take him and his contract over any one player the Leafs have to offer.

You can't take what Murray says word for word. For instance the other day he said that we had 10 prospects with elite potential ready to step into the lineup next year.

We might have a few, but there's nowhere near close to 10.

What he's said basically reiterates what Sens fans have been saying for a long while. We're happy with Spezza, he's been playing great, and we'd hate to see him go. The rebuild plan is focused around this guy and it's been mentioned by Melnyk and Murray on several occasions.

It's pointless to speculate about this. Their intentions are clear, regardless of how much you want to pick apart their words and question their motives simply because they didn't speak in absolute terms.
