I think Sulzer will be dealt. Josi or Blum will likely be called up at roster expansion barring a trade for a defenseman. If we could get out of Dumont's contract (and yes I know he has a NMC), it is a win regardless of the cost.
1) Poile doesn't unite brothers, he breaks them up. What's next, O'Reilly to Colorado? (Wait, that works.....)
2) Moving Dumont would work. AK makes 3.25M and will be an RFA. Dumont 4 million. Team saves, 1,182,796-961,022=221,774. With the remaining cap room of 576K Nashville could STILL make another move for an other defenseman.
3) If this happens, the rumored 3 million dollar bump in Rev. sharing and cap most likely will be coming to fruition.
Poile is most likely not going to trade anything off of the roster that he needs. O'Brien is going to be something that Trotz and Poile agree that they need right now. You'd be looking at moving a forward for another forward. Dumont fits the mold there, and Montreal fits as a place that might take a chance on him, but who knows what the return would be. I'd take AK, but it'd have to be Dumont + something not on the roster.
No way Poile trades Sulzer without having another veteran D-man coming in. Cube isn't ready. With a concussion, who knows when, or even if, he returns this season. And Poile is not going to replace Sulzer with Josi or Blum with the playoff race so unbelievably tight.
I'm sure Poile would love to add a draft pick from Montreal considering the deal for Fisher. But he isn't going to give up a roster player without having an experienced player ready to slide into the vacant position.
And remember when Poile traded for Fisher it was made very clear that he did not want to give up any roster players or prospects in the deal. Listen to Trotz talk about the playoff stretch. He says the healthiest team will probably go the deepest. Giving up Sulzer reduces our depth. What happens if another D-man goes down with an injury.
Just can't see a deal being done for Sulzer alone. There would have to be another piece to the puzzle from another team.
I'm not really all that concerned if Sulzer is dealt and no defenseman is brought back. We're making Sulzer to be some sort of rock-solid, experienced defenseman. He's a fringe NHLer that has played passably while Bouillon is out, but not so well that I don't think that either Blum or Josi could easily step in and replace without issue.
I've said all along that we need to upgrade our defensive unit, even with Bouillon healthy, but Sulzer is more or less interchangeable.
