Tom Gilbert or Kurtis Foster could be had for that Rd. 3 pick....
Burke has actually confirmed that it is for a forward.
I'm guessing it's someone like David Clarkson. I just can't imagine it can be for any big name. You don't trade a big name for a 3rd rounder, regardless of how much he makes.

Christensen to the Leafs for a 3rd rounder. When Fedetenko comes back the Rangers have too many forwards and Fedentko is more valuable to the team than EC.

I don't see the sense in trading the 3rd unless it's packaged for something of value. We wont get much value with just the 3rd. Maybe a team that is looking for a pk player like Sjostrom and the 3rd can get us something decent.
Basically a 2nd and 3rd for Versteeg isn't overpayment. The Beauch deal is overpayment, but that's a team that feels a there a solid Dman away from getting into the playoffs this year.
Nope it wasn't a 2nd round despite how late in the first it is still a first.... maybe in the range of 25-30... I think they got great return for both... Versteeg was a good player had his ups and downs with the leafs but he is a 20+ goal scorer and 50+ pts.... Solid return for that and it gave the leafs more money to work with... With the beauchmin deal it was as u said a great trade and overpayment by the ducks... Gardiner is promising hopefully he can add to his good college years.. But only other good thing is the leafs have good d-man now so DON'T rush the guy.. Let him play college , let him play in the Ahl... and only when ready bring up...I like what burke has done so far the year.. and u have to think that kabby's return would be greater than both right? I mean a 50+ pt d-man expiring contract, playoff experience, can run a powerplay great passer.. Would vancouver be looking at a guy like this with all the injuries... and I would love to see hodgson with the leafs but u seem to be quite high on himm so what abbt say jordan schroeder and draft picks package
Burke is such a bad GM. He's said he wants to win now, blah blah and now trades a young proven player for a late 1st and a late 3rd.
While your at it Burkie, why don't you rid yourself of Kessel. I'm sure an LA might be interested.
I honestly feel bad for you Leaf fans.
honestly dude, do you even watch the leafs? im sure you done, versteeg, yes hes a good young player, but he did not fit in on this team what so ever, he was on a different planet
Honestly, I'm on the fence. I certainly don't think it was as bad as the Lupul trade that's forsure. However, much like the Lupul trade, this one doesn't make sense because it's a step backwards on its own.
If Burke can use that first (and his cap space) to get a guy to play with Kessel, then it's a good deal. Putting Bozak on the 3rd unit next year would give them a decent offensive catalyst, and they could try to throw an ELC player like Caputi pr Mueller along with Armstrong on the 3rd. However, if he isn't able to get a player to make Kessel more effective, it made absolutely no sense to get rid of our 3rd line catalyst.... because a #3 unit of Versteeg-Bozak-Armstrong would problably produce like a mediocre to slightly below average #2 unit.
This trade does have the effect of making the Lupul trade not as disasterous (maybe make Lupul the same 3rd line winger he was in Anaheim as opposed to a healthy scratch), so it gets points for that.
Ok, you're turn to step into the GM seat. What would be a deal that you think would make sense for the leafs to make right now? You never really seem to agree with any move Burke makes, so what would you do if you were him...
1st When asked about Kaberle..Burke didn't explode and go on his normal rant about not asking him about no trade...instead only said that Kaberle agent has asked for secrecy and he would honour that...VERY intriguing to me..I know Dregger also said Kaberle was not asked to waive NTC...so perhaps Kaberle has asked to be traded himself? May make some sense when you think about it..maybe his agent has opened his eyes to what a nice Playoff run with a contending team would do for him in contract negotiations this summer....
2nd..He said the 3rd rounder was in play and already in a purposed deal to bring a player back..he said it would be to take on salary...and the player would be within the "age" he wants (under 30?) So many ways to take that comment...Perhaps its in a big package and he is taking a terrible contract i.e Drury as the salary...and a younger player
If we put 2 of those together maybe we get a
Kaberle plus Philly 3rd to NYR for Drury and Kreider haha
