The GM reiterated what we've been hearing and writing from insiders here and thru the league: That the Rangers are kicking tires (presumably on defensemen), but absolutely refuse to overpay with top youngsters. The club's second, second-round draft pick (in what experts are saying is an average draft) and lower-level prospects could be in play.
Wouldn't want to go dishing our 2nd rounder for a garbage player, though.
Kaberle, Phillips, McCabe are the names that interest me right now. Phillips wouldn't help the offense but he sure would take some pressure off of our young defense come playoff time. (Again, if we get there)
I always figured the 2nd will be out there. So many team deal 2nd rounders. Sather moved a 2nd for Antropov a few yrs back so why would he not move one for a Dman like Kaberle?
I am hoping its Gilroy instead of a 2nd tier prospect like a Valentenko but I guess it's not the worst thing in the world if it did go down that way
Grachev and Hagelin are NOT 2nd tier talents to me. One of them both could conceivably make the team next yr

That doesnt exactly make them 1st tier talents. And given your history of making the NYR populous look like a bunch of hacks, on the main board, with your garbage for the other teams top player proposals. You opinion on who in our organization is a 2nd tier talent is suspect.
Yeah but how much can we conceivably get for that package in this season's NHL with the fact that it's a huge sellers market?
And is it worth it to deal those things for someone that we might not really want or need?
If that package can get us Kaberle (yeah right I think) or Montador (more likely) then I'm all for it. But I don't think it's enough especially when Versteeg goes for a 1st and 3rd rounder.

chillax. My opinion is exactly that mine and just cause someone may not agree does not mean it doesnt make sense to others. People on here are waaaay to hardcore

But in this case he's right to me I don't get why you tried really really good looking prospects just to rent kaberle.
I think Sather definitely wants Kaberle, but I don't think that package gets it done. I thought Burke wanted a 1st and a young roster player? No way he'll settle for a low 2nd and a mid-tier prospect. Either he caves or we trade for someone else because Sather isn't giving up a 1st.
Listening to XM Radio on the drive this morning, they played Burke's press conference from last night after the Versteeg trade. When talking about the picks he got back he said, essentially, that "it used to be that a team was happy to get a 2nd round pick for a rental but that Versteeg got more because he had another year left on his contract."
Few different ways to look at that, if it has any meaning to the Kaberle situation at all: (1) he's setting up Toronto fandom to not be disappointed when they only get a 2nd + minor piece back for Kaberle, or (2) a 2nd round pick isn't enough for a rental, anymore.
Giving up a 2nd round pick seems a little steep considering what we garnered in the draft the last 5 years. Thomas/ Werek/Stepan/Lafleur and AA.
Considering we are not very gifted in scoring goals(middle of the pack), my thoughts is Tomas is nice if we had some finishers who are capable, but in the long run we are not making the necessary splash come PO time so why worry about a offensive Dman. I think we need a cart first before the horse arrives.
I like the direction of the draft and the potential it offers, especially in a cap environment.
A 2nd rounder for a rental is too much.

We have been hearing Karbele rumors for 2 years now. This guy has done nothing in Toronto in years, why do we want him? To be the new Whipping Boy?
Kaberle is a pretty damn good player, he's just been stuck on a ****** team with a really bad coach lately. I think his value definitely has gone downhill and he's not playing as well as he should be, but he could be a really big pickup if the Rangers were in the position to make a run.
I certainly wouldn't want to overpay for him but he's not garbage...just plays on a completely garbage team with a coach that blows
