There's probably a lot more truth to the word "contend" than the context in which you used it here.

All this will do is create competition in the market for veteran Ds at the trade deadline now. It would have been nice not to have to compete with Vancouver to pick up an extra guy. Now the asking price may be too high.

I agree, the timing just seems odd if it's for the road trip. Why call him up today? I guess they want him to be around the team before maybe having to play.

Not good, at all. Better than out for the rest of the season I suppose. I'm worried about the veteran D dropping like flies though. Very concerned with that.

Smallish D who lets the opposing team players dump the puck to gain control of it. They get hit hard, they are small and old.

Not saying it's a bad formula, i liked our D at the begining of the season, but just trying to understand why it is so banged up.

Two of our D are out because of pre-existing conditions (Markov re-aggravating a bad injury and Gorges has been playing without an MCL (or ACL?) for several years now).

Another one is 6'7".

The only one who sorta fits your description is Spacek, and we don't even know what his injury is.

Mostly because they were not supposed to play nearly as much as they do. Gill was playing 23-25 min a game, he should've been around 18. Spacek, Hamrlik should've been lower too, etc. I mean, Markov and Gorges are 2 of our defensemen that could take the most minutes (Markov was taking a LOT), so it's no wonder they will get injured. They're just too old for the amount of ice they're seeing, and this will inevitably lead to either exhaustion or injuries...

Hamrlik - Wisniewski
Picard - Subban
Nash - Weber

I guess is what they'd go with. If he does play, I hope Nash gets tried out on the 2nd PP. But not sure who he would replace... Weber? Hammer? No one really deserves to get cut.

Up front, I assume Darche takes Eller's spot on the Gomez line and White stays with Desharnais?

Seriously I had to think about the pairings for a minute

Ham - Web
Subban - wiz
Picard - Nash

Regardless of anything that third pairing will be an adventure with two rookies hahaha

Martin is gonna have an anurism(sp?)

7th defensmen is a rank, not a role. If we're suppose to keep players on the side-lines in case of injuries, why don't we bring assets we don't have?

This is also going to make things interesting for next year, lots of showcasing of young D in Subban, Weber, Nash, might change the way PG does his defense

That's quite the coincidence given the Preds rumors. Just that though I think, a coincidence.

Maaaaaan are we short of D. Wonder what it was about O'Byrne that made JM have no faith in him?

Good to see that even though the Habs already have a number of young D in the lineup (Subban, Weber, Picard) that they still have more promising prospects waiting to be called up, like Nash.

Oh, and for those that are confused about Carle and/or complaining about O'Byrne being traded, please try to remember there is a difference between LD and RD. O'Byrne was a RD, so if we still had him, whose spot would he take? Wiz? Subban? Weber? Carle is also a RD, so why call him up when we only have two healthy LD (Hamrlik, Picard). We needed a LD, so Nash was called up. Its really not that easy to play out of position on D, we are lucky we have a few guys (Gorges, Spacek) that are able to play both reliably.

This looks like the D lineup.

Wiz-Hammer
Subban-Picard
Weber-Nash

Why'd we call up Nash rather than Carle. Aside from the waiver eligibility mentioned earlier, we also have a very inexperienced D to face the Sabres tonight. Carle is a RD and Nash a LD. We were short a LD. It wouldn't be a good idea to call up someone to play on his off side when they basically have no NHL experience.

Rofl, that's hilarious. Eklund is sooo using that as a source tonight.

And they just put the full line-up for the game and left Eller in it... not sure if they're behind the news with the line-up or way ahead with the injury report...

Really? How does that even defy what I said..."7th defensman in a rank, not a role"?

Thanks for clearing that up...

How about this if you prefer...

He's a 7th defensman, and his role is as a reserve defensman who steps in when there are injuries or if the coach decides to give a rest to another dman in the top 6 either out of fatigue or poor play.

Maybe they called him up to also bring him on the 3 game trip in case someone gets hurt and can't make it out west in time, better to have that extra body with the team practicing and all
