Habs and Oilers:

Nothing involving Penner who would cost too much. Habs acquire Jim Vandermeer (upcoming UFA), and JF Jacques (upcoming RFA) in exchange for a fifth round pick, Tom Pyatt, and minor league prospect Ben Maxwell or Dustin Boyd.

Benefits: Montreal adds depth on defense and size at both ends of the lineup. Edmonton gets something for a Ufa d-man that they won't re-sign and picks up some cheap depth for their roster.

My first proposal threado here so let me know what you think...

Not a bad proposal at all in my mind. At least you have identified a weakness on the Oilers (Center) in who you are offering. Pyatt is at least 52.8% on the draw. I don't know enough about Boyd or Maxwell. Size seems to be a bit of an issue.

Don't know if the Oilers would go for it but at least this is a reasonable proposal.

Maxwell was promise of a good career but he is too constrained on ice...

I think the Oilers do this trade. Slight overpay by the Habs but given the sudden lack of experienced D-men I think it would be a good trade for them.

I'd would switch the 5th to a 2nd rounder pick and drop the prospect.

Vandermeer and JFJ for Pyatt and a 2nd

Big overpayment from Montreal. I'd take the 5th, Pyatt, and Maxwell/Boyd.

I agree it's an overpayment but they are the ones requesting the trade as they need some veteran D help. The 2nd is likely in the 50+ range anyways so it's not that incredibly valuable.

Habs don't have a 2nd rounder this year.

Montréal doesn't have a 2nd.

Jim Vandermeer would be our 8th d depending on how things go.

Hammer, wiz, Subs, Weber, Spacek, Gill, Picard then Vander. Not really sure why we need an 8th dman and on top of that, have to overpay for it...

Ya, that's a decent return. Vandermeer is a shocking +4 on an awful team but is overpaid and UFA. Perfect for playoff team. JFJ is belongs in the AHL at this point in his career but he has good size and speed.

Is there any way it could look like this:

Vandermeer + JFJ
for
2nd or 3rd and 5th + cap dump?

Not sure who the cap dump would be though.

Montreal traded their two 2nds, and it doesn't make any sense for the package.

A second round pick gave us PK Subban. A third round pick gave us Plekanec.

We don't have a second, so its irrelevant. Anyway, I doubt Montreal makes a trade with higher picks for temporary assets.

Hey Oiler fans, we have someone wanting to actually give us something for Vandermeer and Jacques. Shut up and take it.

You dont want Dustin Boyd . He will get placed on waivers again and give an awkward interview right after....

Then we'll take Maxwell. We can use more help in OKC for next year, and that pick is worth as much as Vandermeer and getting rid of Jacques.

I am kinda reluctant to let go of Maxwell . Not ready to throw the towel in on him just yet . I think that we could one day be a good 3rd liner of the Habs.
