I did forget about his father's health troubles.

If that's why he wants to stay, all the power to him.

Hell, he can stay with zero reason at all. His NTC and his years of service guarantee him that.

Great if he wants to help with a rebuild he gets traded for assets then re-signs here in the offseason.

I dont see the point in wasting cap space on him though this team is 3 years away at the minimum from contending.

He is a very usefull player however always elevates his game in the playoffs is a great number 3 shut down guy still has great mobility and is a veteran presence.

i think murray needs to tell him flat out WE WONT BE RESIGNING YOU.

so phillips can stay in ottawa for another 2 months then know full well come july 1st he will have to look elsewhere or go and take a chance at a cup this spring as the sens are in a major rebuild for another 2-3 years.

if phillips says he dosent care to win a cup is that really the kind of attitude you want from a professional athlete while he "mentors" your prospects?

everybody has their time and his has passed

Yeah, Stanley Cup vs ailing father? 2 months of hockey or potentially 2 months left of his fathers life... tough choice.

If I'm the Sens, I'd offer him only up to 3M average and 3 years on a contract extension. If he's not interested in that, you have to tell him you aren't interested in resigning him and that you'd like to explore trading him to a contender for the remainder of the season. Maybe they could leave on good terms and renegotiate in the summer.

His 4 assists and team worst -27 aren't going to do him a lot of favours in any negotitiation.
I think we'll give him a 4 year 10 mil contract and if he returns to last years form hes getting half of what hes worth and aiding a rebuild... if he keeps playing like he has been playing, hes still worth his deal and still a 2nd pairing Dman on a young D-Corps

The Phillips quote is accurate (repeated in the Ottawa Citizen) but he is under some pressure to accept a trade, since he can increase his UFA contract value by having a good playoff run. Don't be surprised to see him move, at least for the remainder of this season.

what a moron...

he has a chance to go win a ring somewhere and then just go back to ottawa in july

it really makes you question his competitiveness desire to wear a SC ring.

not to mention the fact he'd be more of a help netting ottawa some sort of asset then refusing and getting them nothing

Whatever you do, don't read the rest of this thread for possible explanations for this "moronic" behaviour.

If Phillips wants to stay then get the deal done. A 2nd or whatever he'd net would be nice, but so is tradition, loyalty and respect.

Phillips is Superbad this season. Yeeeeeeow!
Proves how ****ing ******** GVT is. You cannot export sabremetric stats to hockey, too many random situations. It works in baseball due to the sheer amount of repetition.

I'm not suprised, this guy is so " comfortable " here in Ottawa why would he want to leave. He has spent his whole career being satisfied to be a good player when he had the ability to be a lot better, the guy has little drive. If I was Ottawa I would not offer him no more then mil/year.

That's ********. The guy has improved leaps and bounds from when he first entered the league. He went from a guy deemed not good enough to play the position (played 4th line wing a lot the first few years) to being one of the best shutdown dmen in hockey. He's been an excellent mentor and helped turn Z into the player he is and Volchenkov into the player he is. He's now doing the same with Erik Karlsson.

Surprisingly, being on a team that scores very few 5 on 5 goals, combined with having an offensive dman as a partner and being out there against the other team's best players makes it difficult to do well in the +/- category. On top of that, it sounds as though his father's health is weighing on him heavily both as a player and as a person and with his play, so have gone the Senators, it seems.
