NCAA Free Agent Stephane Da Costa (update: signed with Ottawa)

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/...om_France.html

Quote:
RALEIGH, N.C. - Just a few days after trading away their first- and third-round picks in this summer's draft for Kris Versteeg, the Flyers are already focusing their attention elsewhere to re-stock the farm system's cupboard.

Paul Holmgren confirmed to the Daily News that the Flyers are courting Merrimack College forward Stephane Da Costa in an attempt to get him to leave college after two seasons.

Da Costa, a 21-year-old native of Paris, has 81 points in 61 games at the NCAA level. Boston and Nashville are two of the other teams with reported interest.

"I think we're one of a lot of teams that would like to have him," Holmgren said. "It's a different avenue. We've traded a lot of draft picks over the last few years. Whether we had draft picks or not, it's a fertile ground to follow."

When Holmgren has his sights set on a player, he usually doesn't disappoint. Last year, Holmgren targeted five undrafted free agents in college - Ben Holmstrom, Mike Testwuide, Erik Gustafsson, Andrew Rowe and Casey Wellman - and Wellman was the only player to not sign an entry-level deal with the Flyers.

Well, when you trade away all your picks, you better be aggressively trying to sign college FAs.

At least the Flyers realize that, lol. There are quite a few undrafted players in the league.

Leino and Bobrovsky off the top of my head.

R.J Umberger

Flyers are pretty good at signing players undrafted.

But France? Can anyone name me an NHL player from France, other than Huet, whom is back in Europe now.

Some other players you might know that weren't drafted but are associated with the Flyers are Darroll Powe and Randy Jones.

Philippe Bozon is the closest you'll come.

RJ Umberger also wasn't undrafted, he was a 1st round pick who didn't sign.

Umberger was a 1st round pick by Vancouver.

And there have been 5 NHLers from France:

http://www.hockey-reference.com/friv...ovince=&state=

Philippe Bozon - 144 GP
Pat Daley - 12 GP
Christobal Huet - 272 GP
Paul MacLean - 719 GP
Andre Peloffy - 9 GP

News like this certainly lessens the sting of more draft picks being traded.

Also, it's a little bit different playing college here, and being French and playing in Europe (likely the Swiss league).

Anyways, hope we get him. Anyone know if any of his games are on TV/streams?

Yea MacLean was pretty good, but Huet is the only recent player. And he was overrated and overpaid.

So the last and really only forward from France to have an actual successful career was MacLean in the 80's to early 90's

And no Dman has ever come from France. Yea this is looking good...

Let us just hope he doesn't hit Pyorala type status around here

Well it's not all bad. Unlike what the article seems to suggest, we were on his tail LONG before our 2011 1st was moved. In fact, we were involved in him last season even though he stayed for another year.

If it makes you feel any better, we were going after him with or without high picks this year.

I was just reading a few things about him on this site, hes 5-10 180, he plays with skill, but gets knocked off the puck easily - thats said about almost every undersized guy though, I believe that was a criticism of Giroux coming out of Junior.

Yea I just saw some talk in the prospect thread touting DaCosta's abilities. I just didn't know he was from France, and that changed my outlook on everything.

Even MacLean got drafted in the 7th round

But seriously, it is low risk high reward. And since we have little in the way of picks I don't mind it. I just wont have my hope nearly as high as others.

Oh don't miss it. My expectations for Da Costa are pretty blank.

I don't know how he will react to physicality. It does say a lot that he's accomplishing what he is in the NCAA as opposed to Canadian Juniors seeing as how the NCAA is a rougher, older league to contend in.

Brian Burke's son lives in the Boston area and scouts the region for the Flyers. Likely, he is influential on the matter, too.

From today's Boston Globe:

http://www.boston.com/sports/college...with_the_best/

Quote:
After climbing to No. 6 in the nation in the USCHO.com poll this week, the school’s highest ranking ever, the Warriors (19-5-4, 13-5-3) are poised to reach 20 wins for the first time since the 1988-89 season, when they were a Division 1 independent.

Merrimack, which is coming off a home-and-home sweep of New Hampshire last weekend, plays at UMass tonight and then hosts the Minutemen tomorrow.

“This time of year, in Hockey East, to have a 4-point weekend and to do it against a team that only had two [league] losses prior, it shows how determined our guys are,’’ said coach Mark Dennehy.

The bad news for Merrimack was that the team lost the services of scoring leader Stephane Da Costa (13-23—36), who suffered a leg injury last Friday. He is not expected back this weekend and his coach was cryptic about his return.

“It’s wait and see, as with most injuries,’’ said Dennehy. “We have no date for a return. A lot of it is up to him and how he rehabs.’’

When you're Merrimack, there's a good chance he is the team.
