Brad Richards top FA Team Choices

http://www.torontosun.com/sports/col.../17341466.html

also up on ESPN Rumor Central (for ESPN Insiders):
http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/featu...tures%2frumors

From STEVE SIMMONS, Toronto Sun
Quote:
The free agent to-be has told an old Tampa source that he has no real interest in playing in Toronto, if he, in fact, becomes a free agent come July. Richards’ first choice is to remain in Dallas, assuming the team gets sold and can afford to sign him. His second and third choice, not necessarily in order, would be returning to Tampa (which doesn’t seem possible economically) or playing for his old coach, John Tortorella, with the New York Rangers. He has also hinted about having some interest regarding playing in Carolina.
on Toronto:
Quote:
he apparently said nothing but shook his head.
sorry Leafs' fans.

So we have:

1. Dallas
2. Tampa Bay
3. NY Rangers
4. Carolina?

Looks like he'll be on the Rangers IF he's an UFA this summer.

Would not rule out Chicago. He wanted to play their when he got traded to Dallas. I can see him taking a discount to take a run at multiple cups with Kane and Toews

Not surprising at all to Dallas fans. We've known this (And tried to tell others) for months but people kept telling us he's going to walk.

I'd like to know where the Toronto Sun thinks it's not possible economically.... Gagne and Smith's contracts coming off the books frees up almost 7 million cap space alone.

It's still questionable if Dallas will have the money. I assume it will be difficult for Carolina to come up with that money as well. I don't think Tampa will have the cap room for Richards. I can honestly see Richards going with the Rangers if he makes it to Free Agency.

Do you really think the Lightning want to pay $7+ million each for 3 centremen? It would make no sense.

Doesn't make a lot of sense for him to go to Toronto at this stage in his career. As a NHL fan, I would love to see Richards and Gaborik on the same line. And Carolina would be a really interesting fit, give them Staal - Richards - Sutter down the middle. That would be very solid.

Ideally ownership is sorted out and he returns to Dallas though.

I have no problem with this. If we don't get Richards, we will get a good draft pick.

Earlier in the season he said:

"I have not ruled it out"

In regards to signing here.

The Toronto media jumped all over this statement. Some of us knew all along that he wouldn't sign here. Others have yet to accept the reality of the situation.

Stamkos extension, Hedman and others down the line. they just dumped Richards cuz they had too much money tied into these guys (St. Louis, Lecavalier, Richards, Boyle). he would want about the same in a new contract. doesn't make sense that they would want to go there again.

He wasn't coming to Toronto anyway, but why would Richards tell a tampa source he didn't want to come to Toronto when the source would tell everyone... It takes out a potential bidder in a bidding war.

Tampa? Even if they found the cap space for him, where is the room for Richards, Stamkos and Lecavalier unless one of them switches to wing?

Well, you also need to give a hefty raise to a guy named Stamkos.

Do you really see Tampa investing $21 million into 3 centres?

True, but he has also made some comments that allude to him not seeking the highest salary he could command - that that wasn't his primary objective in signing his next contact.

And as to why he was traded from Tampa due to salary, we were also a team that had an internal cap at the time, which is why money became an issue. That is not the case now under Vinik.

And due to Boucher's system, primary forward position isn't set in stone - players can shift from center to wing which Vinny, Stammer, and Brad could do quite easily.

Money talks and I have to believe Toronto will offer him the most.

1. Toronto
2. New York Rangers
3. Dallas
