Ian White traded

So, Ian White was traded by Carolina. Was he overacheiving in Toronto because there really wasn't anyone else? He was good when Calgary traded, but was horrid after that and didn't seem to do much better with the Canes.

In the meantime, Babchuk has been solid for us.

Definitely won't be getting a 3 million dollar contract next year.

If I recall correctly, he didn't get a $3M contract with us either.

Babchuk has been awesome. It's like having Phaneuf's big shot from the blue line back, but even better because he knows where the net is.

It was mentioned on the Fan960 a bunch of times that White was playing sheltered minutes in Toronto. Would get lots of powerplay time, wouldn't play against opposing teams top players, was used in a purely offensive role, and so on. In Calgary Sutter tried to use him as a shutdown guy alongside Regehr which was a mistake. Carolina apparently tried to do the same thing with him, which was why it wasn't really working out their either.

In any case, Babchuk has been excellent so far.

So with Kaberle, Brewer, Stuart, and White all probably off the block (unless some of these guys were trade bait for others...maybe Brewer in TBL), who does Vancouver go after with the number of D they're down?

Does this D-man movement make it any easier for us to get some sort of return for Staios?

Honestly, I'd like to keep him. I'd rather keep our depth on the back end, and he hasn't been too bad lately.

The Flames have plenty of depth on the back end though. Trading Staios would clear much needed cap space and give up room for Brodie or Erixon.

much needed cap space? we have room to acquire a million dollar contract as it stands now... and don't want to give up the assets to acquire a $4 million contract

and where is this depth?? with Pardy out indefinitely we have 7 guys including Staios

I'd rather we not trade Staios right now. A month ago, yes...but not now. He's been doing ok and he comes off the books at the end of the year anyway.

He does? I thought he was signed for one more year after this season.

Staios is a pending UFA, that's Sarich you're thinking about.

Nah, I knew Sarich had another year, but for some reason I thought Staios did too.

Thanks fellas.

Bang on. I dont mind having Staios as our 6th man or 7th if Pardy comes back. I hate the fact that he makes almost 3 million but that does not really matter now anyways because he is coming off the books like you said.

Gonna go ahead a bump this thread just for a Staios comment... He played another pretty solid game tonight, and to be perfectly honest I like having him as a depth guy, even over Pardy. Last few games he's been quick, holds the zone well, and even ripping some shots on net.
