Nik Hagman (Calgary)

per Bob Mackenzie

Thoughts? He's got 1 year left at 3.0mil. Seems like a good bottom six with experience kind of guy. Can the Oil really pass on a free player like this?

He needs to play in the top 6 IMO, and we don't have room for him there. Surprised he's being waived though - What pieces are still left on Calgary from the Phaneuf deal?

Why does he need to be top 6? Is he awful defensively? I don't think so, he's always seemed like a hard worked to me too.

Don't have room for him on our roster but I would love to pick him up just to piss off Calgary

Hagman-Reddox-Jones is a serious 4th line. Why not. Oilers don't need the cap space anyway, I can't see any reason not to give him a shot. Oilers do have room for him. We're carrying SMac and JFJ and are shockingly healthy upfront but u know that won't last.

Pick him up and flip him to a higher up for a pick. Hard to believe Calgary found no takers......

I wonder why Calgary is putting 3.0mill on waivers. Does this mean Calgary might make a move today?

From my understanding, you can't trade players who are claimed off waivers the same year.

Don't know why we're even talking about this. There have been a few on waivers (Grabner?) that they should had a look at but Hagman? Really?

I believe you can but they have to be offered to the teams that put in waiver claims (if there are any) first via waivers...i.e..for the waiver price...

Why not? I always thought he was pretty good. Versatile-ish. Tougher than you'd expect and works hard. Puts up reasonable points. Would be 7th on team in points.

Now that you mention it, I think you're right....pass on him then, but I do like his size. If we're entertaing thoughts of moving Omark, Penner or Hemsky ... it would be tempting.

Gimme a break, the guy had 25, 20 and 27 goals the last three seasons. How do you pass on that when its offered to u for free, especially when you're playing JFJ every night...

Penner - Horcoff - Hemsky
Paajarvi - Gagner - Omark
Hall - Cogliano - Eberle

For the fourth line we have: Brule, Reddox, JFJ, Jones, SMac, and you wanna get Hagman too? Nah.

Exactly, big pass. Hagman is NOT a 4th line player. Honestly I would rather Reddox Jones and Jaques

Well the OP would have us believe otherwise. Like he's trying to sell us some used cars.

There is no harm in picking Hagman. A quality top 9 forward whos gritty, solid defensively and can score occasionally. Hes on contract for just 1 more year making 3M. Sounds like an ideal stop gap, especially if one of Hemsky/Penner gets moved.

yes there is. We already have a log jam up front. Put it this way, would you rather pay Hagman 3 million next season or give that to our #1 pick next year who will most likely crack our line-up. Hagman brings no more then (omark, cogs, jones,Reddox,Brule)

But they're not getting moved and spending another $3m on someone to fill a position that isn't required at the moment would be asinine. Who knows what the lineup will look like next year with the possible emergence of Lander, Hamilton, etc. Hopefully management isn't that silly.

I'd happily pick up Hagman, just because if he's on 20 goal pace next year you flip him at the deadline next year.

Hagman brings more than Brule, JFJ and SMac. Plus he has experience and a hot wife. Oilers have an energy 4th line, who's to say Hagman couldn't bring that? Not like Reddox or Jones are big time hitters. Plus he'd be able to move up in case of injuries.

There's absolutely no reason to claim we have to choose between our #1 pick or Hagman, that's just stupid. Oil have tons of cap room. I just think it'd be nice to have a guy over 23 in our bottom 6...

Sounds like Lander is almost a lock to make the team next year. I also have a feeling that we haven't seen the last of a Mr. Zach Stortini. I can't help but believe he trains his nuts off this summer and redefines his role completely as an agitator. Anyone else see this?

Yup, KLowe is the dumbest *89^$#&* in the history of the planet! Don't get me started on Hejda, Brodziak, Smyth, MAP-Parise, 2nd Penner Trade, Comrie for Perry, or any of his other brilliant moves either!

BTW, rumor has it the Oilers are real hot on a kid name Keegan Lowe, and may use the 1st overall pick to take this kid in 2011!
