The trade does make sense on paper, and I think the values are within reason.
Neal is the most expendable of our wings. He's putting up pretty good numbers again, but he just doesn't look like the dominant player that he started out as. In the past, he'd just take over the game during his shifts. He'd pressure & hit one D-man and force a bad pass, then skate over to the other scrambling D-man, lift his stick and rip the puck away and re-establish possession in the zone. I haven't seen that level of play in quite a while..
However.. with all of that said..
Although this trade may indeed go down, I personally do not want to mess with the Stars' top 9.
Our group had extremely good chemistry before the recent slump. The forward play carried the team & gave confidence to the D and goaltending. That's how we were 1st in the division for 80 days. Our best chance to make the playoffs and make some noise there is to get back to that kind of play, not changing the balance of the team and trying to do something different.
The common assumption is that Dallas needs a PMD. But that's not our problem right now. The problem is that our forwards aren't playing like they did when we were winning - in large part due to long-ish term injuries to key players.
If Dallas makes a trade to add a D-man, I want it to be a strong veteran leader. Not necessarily a PMD type. And I don't want it to mess with our top 9 forward group.
I'd do it as a Stars fan if a little + is added along with Gogs. Lack of PMD isn't why they are losing right now, but they do need one at some point. And I'm not sure Neal is going to live up to his potential, well I just know I'm frustrated with him right now. Benn would make the Richards-Eriksson line better than it is with Neal. On the other hand the Stars could keep things as is and sign someone like Pitkanen in the off-season(assuming ownership mess is settled, keep Richards).
Goligoski is better than he gets credit for, I think he could end up a lot like Erhoff. At the same time, he isn't quite there and you'd think the Pens would have to add something. Dustin Jeffrey would be a good pick up for Dallas, or TK.
I really do not want to trade Goligoski -- even for Neal who is a great winger.
That said, if I were Pittsburgh, I would MUCH rather have Benn than Neal, even if I had to add significantly to the package.
I think Benn seems to be off limits.
Even still, Neal is a great pickup for us Pens fans. Goligoski is a nice player but you have to give to get. Shero invested a lot of money to lock down our top 4 this summer and I get the sense he will ride those 4 out.
I'd personally rather have Neal. Even though Raymond would fit in our system becuase although I havent seen enough of the Canucks this year, I remember him last year being very defensively responsible, or at least more so than Neal.
