Should the Flyers Retire 88?

Eric Lindros captained this team for what, 7 years? He led us to a SCF and several other playoff runs. He won a Hart Trophy and he was a hell of a player. He'd go out, score 2 goals, then beat the living hell out of the first opposing player that looked at him funny. People can question his toughness all they want, but I personally have nothing but respect for this guy and I feel that he truly was and is a Flyer. I say retire 88.

No. Not for a good while longer, at least. The fact that he wasn't part of a Cup winning effort hurts his chances.

If you retire 88, then you have to retire a bunch of guys that played in the 80's.

I cant see anyone taking #88 anyway. Its not like its a popular number like 2-19. It would be weird if we picked up some random FA and he decided to be #88.

No.

He'll probably go into the Flyers HoF at some future point, but he will never have his number retired.

We would've found that out had we drafted Kane...

My response to this is the same as every other "should Lindros be..." question. Based solely on what he did on the ice, Lindros' number should be retired, he should make the HOF, etc. What hurt Lindros the player and continues to hurt his legacy is Lindros the person. He seems to have matured and mellowed but old memories die hard, I think it'll be some time before he will be evaluated primarily for his on-ice accomplishments.

Don't win a Cup, you don't get your number retired. Though, if you get into the HHOF it might be different... but for reasons that defy logic, we haven't gotten to test that with Mark Howe yet.

Not unless he goes into the Hall. Like others have said, there are other players equally (or more) deserving of having their number retired. Lindros wasn't exactly a fan favorite toward the end of his career either so if he got in over some of the players that could be up there there would be a lot of people unhappy.

He was the most dominate player to ever wear a Flyers jersey, but with the way his Flyers career ended a number retirement likely won't happen.

Not with the way everything ended up.

Had he actually stayed here and finished his career here it wouldn't be a question, but as it was? No Cup win, numerous issues with the organization...good enough for the Flyers HoF, but not a jersey retirement. That's special, hallowed territory that unfortunately his legacy won't earn him.

Yes, he was the most dominant player to wear the orange and black. His problems with managment didn't become extremely bad until the night of the Predators game where he broke a rib and had a collapsed lung, if it wasn't for Kieth Jones demanding he be sent to the hospital instead of taking a plane back to philly he would be dead, that is backed up by doctors that worked on him in Nashville.

Only if he is elected to the HHoF.

If any number deserves to be retired at this point, it's gotta be Leclair's 10, Howe's 2, or Hextall's 27. I don't personally believe any of them deserve to be retired, but certainly they shouldn't be worn here anymore.

Howe is the only one of that group that really deserves it if we're going to give it to a non-Cup winner. Howe would have almost certainly been a 1,000 pt guy in the NHL if he'd played his entire career in the NHL.

Howe you can make an argument for and he should at least be in the hall.
LeClair, no. If 88 isn't retired 10 can't be. He was a product of Lindros. Would he have scored 35-45 a year without him? Sure, but not 50+.
Hextall, no. He's a Philly guy and he's loved here but he didn't nearly have good enough numbers to retire his number.

Hextall almost stole us a cup from one of the best teams in the history of professional hockey. He's got a Conn Smythe that attests to that. Seeing Downie wearing 27 never sat well with me.

Versteeg has already been given 10 .

I personally think that these guys should all have been retired: Kerr, Howe, Lindros, LeClair, possibly Hexy.

It's a crime that Howe hasn't been.

Also, it'd be hilarious and beyond awesome if they'd retired Schultz's 8.

Hextall oughta get his retired solely for assaulting Chris Chelios.

Agree and Tim Kerr is right behind him, IMO. Before John LeClair and the "current" day retired Flyers.

But as we know, you don't get your number retired unless you win a cup. And that's a good thing. It will be a better argument years from now when we're deciding between Richards, Giroux and dare I say Carter?!

Lindros was my favorite Flyer to watch, ever. But no, he does not deserve his number to be retired.
