Leafs to add a defenceman today?

From James Mirtle of the Globe and Mail

Quote:
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke said today he may be about to pull the trigger on yet another deal, one that would bring in a defenceman to replace the departed Francois Beauchemin and Tomas Kaberle.
Quote:
Were trying to add by tomorrow if we can," Burke said. "Were trying to put a player in the lineup as soon as possible.

Weve had some discussions about forwards that we have to consider, but its not our priority. Our priority will be to add a defenceman."

Any guesses anyone? Andy Sutton? It seems like Anaheim has a surplus of defencemen and Sutton meets the truculance requirements that Burkie seems to like.

Probably that 3rd rounder Burke has been trying to flip. Who's out there for that price?

I'll be happy with anyone that's not Brett Lebda. This is great news.

I can't see burkie wanting to add Sutton. he wants to add players of the early-mid 20's range. Although if he's only willing to trade the flyers third rounder he might not have a choice.

Wallin is on his way Burke. I dropped him off at the airport for you. He seemed pretty pissed when I left him at the curb, but being bound and gagged will do that I guess.

I wonder if Burke would have interest in JML as a Kaberle replacement. Already signed for next season. American born...

Who would come back though? Avs needs are in net, or a top six winger. Not exactly things the Leafs are chalk full of.

it's going to be a top 4 d man. with schenn , phaneuf , aulie as three of our top 4 for years to come he wants to plug that hole and then move on to forwards so which top 4 could be available. someone who is due for a big raise or upcoming UFA that would sign a extension with a trade.

I think it would have to be a PMD, with Kabs and Beauch gone we're short of dmen who can handle the puck. Hopefully he doesn't trade any major assets, I really want us to stay committed to a rebuild through the draft. Band aid solutions for now so Boston's pick isn't too high, then tank next season.

If Colorado is intent on trading Liles to shed salary next year, he definitely should be interested. At $4.2m he fits nicely into our top 4 next year playing alongside either Dion Phaneuf or Luke Schenn, with Carl Gunnarsson also in there and put us in a position where we're not relying on getting Joni Pitkanen or Christian Ehrhoff. His contract is also low enough to allow Toronto to sign one of those guys in addition if they move Komisarek, and have a very good top 4.

That being said, with the absolutely ridiculous prices being paid for puckmoving defencemen, I don't think we'd be prepared to pay what he's worth.
