I'm guessing it wasn't the hit that hurt him, it was when he hit his face on the ice when he fell.
Face shields!
Neck guards!
Wrist guards!
Imagine all the meaningless injuries that could be avoided.
EDIT:
Just saw the update.
Hope its not serious.
Have you played hockey? I agree whole-heartedly that they should wear at least a half-shield, but neck and wrist guards? They were mandatory up until Squirts and then everyone ditched them because they're irritating and limit mobility.
I'm guessing it was that play in the first where he got twisted around defending near the net on a dump in, Sam made some comment on it. I don't think anything could possibly be torn on a play like that especially on a young guy, but who knows.

I have really weak knees, if I turn the wrong way I twist my knee. Oh my god it is painful when it first happens. But if its bad enuf it can be a torn mcl, by the way it sounds its either a sprained mcl (I currently have a sprained mcl by twisting my knee) or straied. Ehh I might have to get surgury because this happens to me like every 3 days. ):
Never wanna hear about the knee but I suppose it's better than getting a concussion. Sounds like they kept him out tonight as a precaution, hopefully it really is nothing serious.
You can hit almost any Ranger player dirty on most nights and get away with it...having all that toughness in the game sure helps LOL ! You would think somebody could have started giving Eric at least a little grief over it ??? Guys like Boyle and Avery surely could have found a way to give him at least a face wash without drawing a penalty .

Guys did get in Staals face about the hit, what are you talking about?
And the hit wasn't even dirty. It happened in a somewhat dangerous place but Staal kept it clean at least
The hit was squeaky clean, but it bothered me that Staal lined him up like that. Maybe I'm not competitive enough, but I have a twin and I can't imagine doing that to him.

Ditto on all points. Eric also got a charging penalty on Marc in NY.
Michael Del Zotto please step up in Marc Staal's absence.
If we're relying on MDZ to fill Marc's skates...Oh boy are we in trouble. MDZ struggled most of the night...got torched at least twice by Cole. He just seemed unable to handle the speed of the game. I can't watch him in the O-zone...he misses the net every time he takes a shot. I suppose he's managed to find it twice this season. But I don't think I've ever seen a guy miss the net as often has he does. Definitely gripping the stick too tight. He needs to calm down. On the plus side, Sauer really stepped it up last night.

Lined him up AND his head was down. Not that that's Eric's fault, but if you see a guy with his head down...especially your brother...maybe you ease up a bit. Then again....maybe not. Eric went old school on his bro. Kudos to him. Eric deserves that C on his chest. Leading by example. Shows the team that his compete level is the same against everyone...even blood. Gotta respect that.
The best was since Jim Ramsey was rubbing the side of his face, they thought it was that Staal hit the side of his face on the way down from the hit. Hahahahaa.
Nothing was worse then Joe screaming "Sam that puck's in the net!" during the Devils game.
The thought of Joe cackling that just gave me a ****** chill . Only Chico is worse . I love that Bufalo guy he's as cheesy as they get . Dreeeewwwwww Stafffffford !!! Haha
Well the team pulled it out in the end without him. Staal is a really important part to the blueline I wouldn't want to go long stretches without him but one game maybe forces them to bring Vtank up and give him a chance to release his cannon on the PP.

HAHAHAHA!!!!! You ain't kidding!
At that moment, I don't think I had ever hated an announcer more nor ever felt like more of an idiot for actually having crossed my fingers and bounced up and down anxiously in my seat while mumbling "c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, oh please oh please oh please". Then I wondered "was I the only one who just let himself get totally emotionally suckered into that?", but I guess not.
