McDonagh upside

Curious what observers of McDonagh see as his upside. I've heard a better skating version of Regehr.

I think at worst a top 4 defenseman. Kid looks legit.

#2/3 type guy. #2 on a bad team, #3 on a good team. True tweener if there ever was one. Think a slightly poor Paul Martin.

A positionally sound Brad Stuart. Solid 2nd pairing guy who plays physical, can play on the 2nd PP unit, and put up somewhere around 20-25 points in his prime.

His skating is superb for his size and he is already very strong at 21. Marc Staal is his absolute ceiling.

He certainly has taken the sting out of the Gomez signing .

With his skating ability, physical strength and underrated (on this board) puck moving ability his upside is an all-star defenseman. He has a big shot which when he develops more confidence he will begin to let loose. He may not be the top lefty d-man on this team due to Staal's presence but he will play 23 - 27 minutes a night providing shut down talents with offensive abilities. He is a stud.

Better skater than Stuart (hence the Paul Martin one from me), though.

More physical than Martin, though. Not sure he has the puck moving ability either.

Somewhere in between sounds about right.

I think he has the puck moving ability (IE first pass and such). He doesn't have as much in the offensive zone, though.

He is really a hybrid of the two, haha.

paul martin??

nothing like paul martin. the kid is a monster on skates physically. and he's def not as heady with the puck in the offensive zone as martin.

really with all due respect this is way way off.

i think hes def going to be better than brad stuart because's he's already stronger and a much faster skater.

i love this kid sky's the limit

Did you guys see this kid explode out of our zone to dump the puck in the Philly game. It was almost as if everyone else was standing still. I was like woah. I'm pretty sure it was the philly game.

He's actually quite like Paul Martin. Not sure why you'd disagree, since you mentioned nothing as to why it is "way way off".

They play a very similar positional game on the back-end. McDonagh is more physical and more engaging, but they are both about as reliable as it comes defensively. Both have a great first pass and both play a real heads up game back there. As I said, McDonagh is a bit more active and engaging, but both are cerebral players. Neither player is noticed much since they are not prone to making mistakes. Both are very fluid skaters who use their speed and acceleration to cut down the skating lanes of an opposing player on a rush (which is a great asset for both of them).

They have their differences, but their basic games are very similar. Martin is better offensively, as I already pointed out a number of times.

The Martin comparison has been thrown around quite a bit by a number of people and it's always rung true.

Monster on states would be correct. When he gets mad he hit's like a train.
Would still like to see him be a little more pysical though..He's capable.
I also think he needs to work on his puck handling skills. Although young and improving IMO that would be the one area i believe would be a shortcoming.

Amazing that at 21 he is so solid in his own end. No matter what happens the rest of the way, the development of McD and Sauer this season is going to pay huge dividends in a season or so. If we don't trade anyone in two seasons the top 4 of Staal, Girardi, McD and Sauer is going to be one of the best in the league. To answer the questions McD reminds me of a poor mans version of Chelios.

He does remind me a little bit of a young Paul Martin. We can only hope he becomes that good.

Staal, Girardi, McD and Sauer as shut downs.

McIlrath as a Beukeboom.

MDZ as the PP quarterback.

Not bad. Should be among the best in the NHL.

Well if you asked the Habs fans, hes probably not going to make it in the NHL.

In all seriousness, it's hard to tell at this stage in the game. But I will tell ya one thing, I'm loving the kids game at this point!

The NHL version, anyway. His offense never transferred to the NHL as good as it could have been and I think he's going to continue to be a 30-35 point player. McDonagh has the ability to become a 25-30 point guy on the basis of his speed and outlet passes alone, really.
