Craig Rivet [claimed on re-entry by Columbus]

Per McKenzie's Twitter.

I didn't think it would actually happen.

Rivet was a pretty good guy, but he didn't have a place on the team anymore. Hopefully he lands on his feet.

starting off by waiving our underachieving captain.

Good start for the Pegula era!

Giving the guy a chance to get picked up elsewhere where he might get played? Must be the Sabres way of saying that they're done with him and can't find any buyers on the trade market.

I my guess would be that Rivet requested the move, and new ownership obliged

I honestly can't see another team claiming him. He's all but desitned for retirement this summer IMO.

Hope Darcy pushed hardcore to trade him first.

Now what does that mean with his salary? We pay the rest of the year?

Interesting. He clearly had no trade value (not even for a conditional 7th round pick), so I thought maybe they'd just sit him in the pressbox until the season ended and let him walk into the sunset. Waiving your captain takes balls, but I like that they did it. If someone else can take him, great. I'd be interested to see if they name a new captain in season or wait until summer.

Trade coming up?

Perhaps they just couldn't find a buyer for Rivet, but they could be clearing bodies.

Anywho...
I'm gonna miss you, Rivet. You were a true hockey player. It was unfortunate we acquired you after your prime, more so the downslide of your career, but you never backed down from anyone. A true leader on the ice. It's too bad your legs couldn't keep up with your fire.

In actual dollars, yes.

The cap hit is off the books though if he is sent down to the AHL.

Who's going to trade for the Sabres' 36 year old #7 defenseman, who couldn't fight off Chris Butler for a spot in the lineup? I'd be amazed if anyone picks him up on waivers.

Whatever the reason, requested or whatnot, it's a statement move -- and I like it.

That would be the ultimate low for Rivet - I think he'd retire first before accept a demotion since he clearly knows he has no future in Buffalo anymore.
