Shelley has done what he was signed to do, to a degree: he has been a good soldier and dropped the gloves, though few have been wins and the suspensions have not been on the plus side of his ledger.
That's my take on it as well. The other players had injuries to deal with and Shelley is doing is exactly what they wanted him to do so you can't really call that a failure. Zherdev, while definitely a failure, is not a huge deal because it was a roll the dice low risk high reward type move. Not to mention the good of Mez, OD, and Bob really outweigh the bad by a lot. I know people will argue this, but these monumental failures people are talking about haven't stopped the team from sitting atop the Eastern Conference and one point off the pace for the entire NHL.

Depends on the nature of the discussion and the temperament of the "request." I doubt the agent simply called Holmgren and said "Could you waive him, please?" It's likely the finality of prior talks.

It'll be awesome if they risk Walker on re-entry.

AWESOME.

Especially given that OD is only a short-term injury.

Isn't their an injury exemption for re-entry wavers? If someone claims walker, they are screwed cap-wise.

Even without injuries, almost everything about the Leighton signing was bad. A lot of the offseason was one long WTF moment, and it has mostly undone itself.

In what could only be described as a move that everyone expected, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported via Twitter that the Philadelphia Flyers have placed winger Nikolay Zherdev on waivers.

http://nhlhotstove.com/flyers-zherde...ed-on-waivers/

And so ends an experiment that began with GM Paul Holmgren’s signing of the winger to a free agent contract last summer.

head over an take a look at David Strehle's thoughts on the latest installment of the Zherdev saga, thanks

There is an emergency exemption... but I don't really see it as an emergency when we have a couple of other guys in the AHL we can call up without having to put them on re-entry.

...Not, it isn't. Not necessarily.

Zherdev is a piece I wouldn't mind picking up for free. He's not a piece I would want to pay for.

It's like there's this cool jacket at the store. You don't REALLY want the jacket, it's just a cool jacket. In 30 minutes, the jacket is yours for free - if the 6 people in front of you in line don't want it.

You don't need the jacket, and you don't really want to spend $5 on it. So you don't care if you don't get it, even though it'd be sweet if you did.

Never really seen anything like it. Zherdev bolted out the side door to avoid media and hopped in a limo and left with a smile on his face.

Not really, we couldn't have called him up anyway. Well...I hope we wouldn't have called him up.

In other news, Walker's legs aren't structurally sound.

With Bartulis hurt, and now Walker out for a long time, I see us grabbing a 6/7th d-man for the playoff ride.

Also from Sam Car

#Flyers will gain some cap space from Z fiasco and maybe acquire a Dman. With Z on waivers, Wellwood next in line if F is injured.
If Shelly cant be back by tomorrow's game Wellwood will be called up.

We will grab a depth defenseman.

There isn't a choice.

Do people realize that if Bob hadn't exceeded expectations and now to some extent Boosh..that the gambles on all 4 of those guys would not have gone down very well at all given the money that was spent and cap space tied up....Holmgren has to be thankful the majority of his moves unravelling for whatever reason has been contained but it hasn't been without impact either and we still have to see what happens in the playoffs where things ultimately matter....

We'll see. Apparently OD won't be out long, and Bart may not be out long either. However, I'd rather have someone better than a recovering Bartulis.
