Seems similar to the Mair situation last year -- offer him in trade, no takers, offer him to waivers to see if someone is interested.

Solid first move of the new era, I'd say.

He hasn't been claimed yet folks, so the talk of him being out the door and gone is a bit pre-mature.

Thanks for seemingly stabilizing the lockerroom, though.
He was notorious for playing dirty in the corners. He never was a huge hitter, just nasty with his stick work, which I think he still showed in Buffalo. His toughness showed at times, but I wonder if his shoulder injury held him back in that regard?

The dude is beaten up and slow now. It's hard to fault him for his mediocre play here.

True, but since there's only a quarter of the season left, it's a lot easier to fit his hit under the cap. And the Sabres could, of course, try him on re-entry waivers as well.

EDIT: if I'm understanding Capgeek correctly, there are 22 teams that could take on Rivet's cap hit off waivers as is.

Maybe they can work something out with the Pens to claim him on reentry? Pull some strings? We're talking less than 1% of the cap here.

Otherwise, I hope they follow through and send him down to the AHL. I understand wanting to set a new tone and treat your players right, but winning is winning. You don't win paying Rivet to sit in the press box, C or not. Guy still gets his money in the A, so it's not like we're being cheap.

Yeah, if you sort by available contract (the "MAX Cap Hit" column) you will find 22 teams that can take him on "as is".

Why the Pens?

Pegula's PA connections. And moving him to a contender looks a lot better, player-relations wise, then sending him to the minors.

Strange dynamic if he doesn't get picked up.

Does he retain the captaincy after being waived?

It would be stupid to risk him getting picked up (no matter how slim the chance) and be stuck with a small cap hit, rather than just let his contract expire normally at the end of the season.

We can afford to pay for him to do nothing now, it's just a question of whether we need the cap space for roster changes or not.

Waiving Rivet is treating every other player on this team right by fronting a more competative team. With that said, I like Rivet and do hope someone will claim him for leadership and depth.

It's doubtful they send him down. That's the opposite of treating a player right, ie. forcing him to swallow his pride and ride the bus away from his family.

Why would it be more stupid to pay him twice as much to sit in the press box and be bored than to pay him half as much to play for someone else?

He should call a meeting and figure that out. Either he can suggest a successor, or let the team or Lindy pick one, but he really should just give it up already.

They don't need cap space. As of today, they have $17,396,580 available between today and the end of the year -- WITH Rivet.

It's tough, but I can see both sides - you also want to make it clear that performance matters, and it's doing the rest of the team a disservice by having the C sitting in the press box. I guess they could just have him give up the C, and keep him on for the rest of the year.
