I doubt anyone picks up his cap hit. If anything, he'll be placed on re-entry waivers in an effort to get him to a contender who wouldn't trade anything for him, and if he isn't claimed he'll make the decision to retire or not show up for the AHL (if he's assigned there).

To me, unless we're making a trade, this is more of a service to Rivet than anything else. He knows this is his last year and he's going to want to go somewhere that he might play or could at least enjoy a final cup run. He can't force other teams to make a trade for him, so he probably asked to be waived to see if anyone would pick him up.

Good move no matter what happens.

Ta,
Yep. If no one takes him, they tried to find him a home. If they consulted him, it's the right thing to do.

If they didn't, it's crappy and the way they operated under BTG/LQ.

I suspect the did this after trying to find a taker.

Its will be interesting to see how this plays out.

In the past it was rare for them to waive anyone in season. When they cleared they were staying. Now with Pegula we can think of other possibilities if he isn't claimed.

Like send him down to free up cap space for a move.

Fun to think of other possibilities even if they don't happen.

They don't need the roster spot as of the deadline and they have $17 million in available cap space to use by the end of the year. He won't be going anywhere unless he's claimed.

I was always a fan of Rivet. The fan in me hates seeing him waived, knowing how good he used to be. But he's too slow and broken down now to be effective.

Isn't Portland getting hit hard by injuries? If so, imagine if Regier is doing this to get an extra body down there (assuming Rivet just wants to play somewhere). That'd be like the anti-Regier.

If he retires which he should he doesn't count against the cap

Maybe while in trade talks they decided someone in particular would grab him if they put him on waivers yet wasn't willing to give anything up.

Yeah, I thought of that after my post. I'm too excited for a possible move after yesterday. I'm jumping on anything.

Sarcasm, missed it.

And to answer your question, yes, everyone is getting him.

I claim his pelvis.

And now remembering that Cap Space is adjusted over the year it isn't that hard to think somebody might claim an expiring contract like Rivet's, unless they worry about real money.

I think Regier has something in the works. Sending Byron down and waiving Rivet freed up 2 roster spots. Rivet doesn't have to be assigned to Portland to be removed from the active roster. They can simply add him back in 5 days.

I agree with pretty much your entire post. I think Darcy likely shopped him and couldn't get another team to bite, which was Step 1 in trying to move him. With Pegula in the fold, it seems clear that there was a conversation that they would try to find him a home where he could potentially play--and that won't be Buffalo, given that they're in the middle of a playoff push and just can't risk putting him on the ice with games as important as they are. This was the Step 2 in trying to find him a home. If he gets claimed, great. If not, Step 3 is placing him on re-entry waivers and seeing if a team will take him on at half of his remaining salary (around $450k by that time).

I like what they're doing. It shows respect for a guy who has a lot of respect around the league. I have no doubt they talked to Rivet about this before they did it. And it's certainly not a "ZOMG, you suck so bad, you're out of here, you bum" move.

Treat people right. It's a little thing that goes a long way.

Which is why I'm not worked up over this move one way or the other. Rivet on the team probably has no effect on their plans through the rest of the year. Like you I do wonder if this was something he requested.

And, as we know from Mair and Paetsch, waivers doesn't mean he's off the team.

Looking for the first move by Darcy Regier and, hence, Terry Pegula? The Sabres have put captain Craig Rivet on waivers. They're obviously hoping someone claims Rivet, who is still owed about $850,000 for this season.

Because like Chain said. They're not going to make the captain go to Portland to ride the bus and play away from his family. That would be a horrible way to treat players. A day after they said they want to treat players great. It's extremely doubtful he goes down to the Pirates.

Paul Hamilton on Rivet move: Possible that Rivet ASKED for it, in hopes he'd get picked up so he could play somewhere. #Sabres

Update:
@TSNBobMcKenzie Bob McKenzie
BUF put Rivet on waivers to give him a chance to resume his NHL career elsewhere. He's not playing in BUF, not part of the plan.
