Saying he's fine but replaceable is over-analyzing his play?

What's even the point of saying he's replaceable? He's a 4th liner making 600k, of course he's replaceable. The point is there are others currently on the team who are more so. That is, if they weren't given contracts that makes doing so more difficult than it ought to be.

Because the point was made that he "belongs" in the NHL and they're screwing around with him (and would lose him via waivers, which is fairly laughable). The Stars aren't screwing around with him - he's filled in fine but he hasn't made any sort of "you must keep me up at this level" statement, so as the guy with the two-way contract, he's the guy who gets sent down. Thinking that's screwing with him somehow is stupid.

No one said that the Stars are "screwing" with him. The part that's stupid is allowing the makeup of your roster to be dictated by contract pay levels rather than merit.

UnholyPrince definitely implied it.

And in a cap world, not to mention on a team with the in-flux ownership situation, contract pay levels always dictate the makeup of your roster to some extent.

I live in NYC, where our local team has the money to keep up players who earn their spot, regardless of contract. Sometimes its hard for me to accept that a player who plays better than anyone our 4th line getting pinballed back and forth.

I'm lost. Barch and Petersen were both replaceable in the summer, and not in a theoretical sense but in the sense that replacement players already in-house may provide better play on the ice at smaller price tags. I get that management made their bed and so forth, but I find it seriously hard to believe that taking those two players out of the room would make the team chemistry go to ****.

Edit: Ownership situation notwithstanding, winning organizations play the players that help you win games.

The problem is, you can't say "ownership situation notwithstanding" with this organization at this point. I would love to be able to, and if there were no financial issues, I would (kind of) understand the frustration at sending Gagnon down, though I am less enamored with his play than some people here apparently.

But this organization is clearly a little cash-strapped at this point and to pretend they should make decisions as if they are not is ignoring the obvious.

Barch and Petersen are also replaceable, and if they could somehow get rid of the contracts without having to pay for the empty space, I'd have no issue with it. But they're on one-way deals while Gagnon costs approximately 10 percent of his NHL cost at an AHL level, so barring a trade, those two are going to be up all year because of the team finances.

The organization being cash strapped has nothing to do with poor or questionable internal player assessment. I get Joe's whole "intangibles" mantra but there is a point where it's sort of bullsh. If this team is so close to falling apart that not returning Barch and/or Petersen this past summer then they're a paper tiger anyways.

I'm not enamored with Gagnon but I have liked what I've seen from him in limited viewings the last two seasons. The team's finances were part of the scenario during the summer when Barch and Petersen were extended so it's pretty weak to use their compensation as reason for playing time in lieu of (perhaps) better players. We don't work with all the facts on these boards but I stand by my and others' offseason position that re-signing Barch and Petersen were both questionable moves, especially when you throw in quality replacements at better value. Save your pennies on the fringe, especially when you actively search out and (over)pay for a guy like Burish and re-sign Ott at the rate he's getting paid.

Edit: I want to reiterate that I'm not saying to ignore the obvious. These players are on the roster and that likely won't change anytime soon, thus the "make your bed" comment. I get it. However I, and apparently others around here, do think it's worth pointing out when recent past moves have been questionable and continue to appear so.

I think sparing him from that game was a genuine act of mercy.

Assuming Benn and/or Wandell are out for any substantial time, this is going to be a good test for Gagnon.

Sent down. I have to say, I'm disappointed he didn't show more, though his faceoff ability was still there and an improvement over any of the other 4th line options.

I had high hopes for him after his preseason. He really didn't show anything special this long stint in the NHL.
