Trade Deadline

Last one is over 1000 posts.

Where we left off: Canucks fans were polarized into pro- and anti-Mason Raymond camps. Whatever will happen next? (My bet is Gillis doesn't move him Monday).

I'll take this opportunity to talk about some other possible trade targets:

Chris Thorburn - Big, defensively responsible, hard-hitting winger. Not a whole lot in the way of skillz.
Cody McCormick - Two-way gritty fourth line center. Again, doesn't play so well with the puck but miles better than any solutions there so far.

Ought to be able for picks/fringe prospects (Shirokov, Oberg, etc). Ideal forward lineup going into the playoffs:

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
Torres-Kesler-Samuelsson
Raymond-Malhotra-Thorburn
Glass-McCormick-Hansen

I like the balance. Grit, skating, skill, defensive awareness on every line. I'm a huge fan of Raymond in a checking role because a) he DOES check well and is a big part of the PK, b) he's better at carrying the puck into the zone than Malhotra.

Thorburn isn't half bad on face-offs as well. He's also a great forechecker.

I'll add that there are two areas that I would like to see being addressed.

We need to add a 4th line center (duh) and we need to add another winger on the 4th line as well.

I'd be a huge fan of adding Thorburn. He's been quietly underrated in Atlanta for quite awhile. He'd be great bouncing between the second and third line and I think he'd develop chemistry with Kesler. Also there's no way it'll ever happen but part of me wants to claim Zhedrev.

Mike Gillis would never do such a thing as he values character above all else and has stated so in the following interviews with the local press and the official NHL site:

Even if gillis WERE to move raymond, It would be in the offseason. Gillis doesn't like making deals on the deadline hes said as much many times...

I don't think the 4th line needs a center in particular I think the 4th just needs a major upgrade all around whether it be a winger or two or a center. The problem is our 4th line does not go out there and change momentum like they should so AV doesnt give them much ice time. If we could pick up a defensively sound and hard hitting 4th liner (winger or center) or a combination of both then problem solved.

That being said I don't know too much about Thorburn, but I do know we need a lot more grit and someone who will drop the mits when needed. Neil would fit well but he makes 2m and left last nights game with an injury BOOOO!

Crazy three way trade featuring teams that hate one another, divisional rivals, the Canucks taking on a medium term contract they probably can't afford, the whole nine yards.

To Toronto:
Mason Raymond

To Ottawa:
Jerry D'amigo
4th Round Pick in 2011 (Vancouver's)

To Vancouver:
Clarke MacArthur
Chris Neil

Canucks lineup:

Sedin-Sedin-Burrows
MacArthur-Kesler-Samuelsson
Torres-Malhotra-Hansen
Glass-Hodgson-Neil

Canucks can comfortably roll four lines, have four nearly interchangeable wingers in the bottom six (and Hansen, who can play on the second line) and only take on about $600K against the cap.

Bogosian

I was having this discussion with a buddy and wondered what everyone else thought.

The basis is Hodgson, Ballard + something (2nd round pick) for Bogo, Bergfors and something (sopel or Antropov were mentioned because they expire after this year).

Vancouver hasn't had a top notch D prospect since Bourdon. Cody is behind Henrik, Kesler and Manny on the C depth chart. Ballard has been less then impressive and at 4 million a season for the next 4 years... That money can be better used on resigning Ehrhoff, Bieksa (maybe) and Edlers raise.

Atlanta has a hard time attracting free agents, getting a quality defenseman signed for the next 4 years is huge. Additionally, Hodgson is a blue chip prospect that can play now, just isn't getting the opportunity in Vancouver.

I've got as big a Bogosian mancrush as anyone, but personally wouldn't be willing to give up what it would take to get him.

Edler is already signed for two seasons after this season so that isn't an issue.

With the cap going up, there is cap space for re-signing BOTH Ehrhoff & Bieksa to reasonable deals; and it's not like Bogosian will be on his entry level deal next season - he'll have to be re-signed as well (lowballing him only invites offer sheets from rival GMs) so the so-called "savings" will be minimal.

What happens if either Hank or Kesler get hurt? Who is capable of handling either of the top two center spots in the near future? Certainly not Maholtra.

I wouldn't mind the Canucks sending an offer-sheet to him in the Summer as long as it's not too outrageous.

All our picks for the next while will be late and acquiring a 20yr old, RH, Physical, potential #1 d-man with a big shot is well worth it.

Could also be Bieksa's replacement if Gillis deems him expendable.

As long as we don't trade our 2nd round pick for Eric weinrich. We could have drafted Milan lucic w that pick.
