They chose the one that had the least ability to play due to injuries but had the most heart. That should be a kick in the balls to Zherdev if he knew that.

Six AHLers on the roster last night was one too many apparently.

Plus, the Sens just sent Kovalev to the Pens, so it makes even more sense.

Why claim Svatos when they could have claimed Zherdev instead?

Zherdev probably doesn't care about clearing waivers. All he cares about is living the dream, ie big bucks for little effort.

Uncle Eugene has made it clear he is cutting costs, Svatos makes peanuts, Zherdev will still cash in 500 K the rest of the way.

By the way expect the Buffalo Sabres to put Craig Rivet on re-entry waivers to see if teams would take him at half the price

Zherdev cleared??

Does this mean he has a deal to be loaned to the KHL? I can't see why no one would take a chance on him otherwise

Im betting whatever next team "takes a chance" will be his last stint in the NHL.

zherdev is kovalev with less talent, less heart, less experience, and more issues. That is why no-one claimed him.

Out of curiosity, have you ever actually seen Svatos play? He's not lacking in talent. But, if it wasn't physiologically necessary for pumping blood, I would say that Svatos has no heart. Of course, poor (read: no) circulation would explain why he's so darn injury-prone...

Little surprised to see the Sens claim Svatos. Guess the Kovy deal cleared the way.

I was under the impression that a team that steals a player from waivers like Nashville did to St. Louis with Svatos, cannot waive him later; he must remain on their NHL roster all season after being claimed.

Is this impression not correct, or did the Blues just get robbed twice on the same player?

apparently the Thrashers seriously considered claiming Zherdev and decided against it for "character reasons"

I think you are very much under the wrong impression...

If you claim any player (not just when you "steal" them), you can't trade them before you put them back on waivers.

You can always put a player on waivers (unless they have a NMC).

Says a lot about what other teams think of Zherdev. Nobody wants him and his laziness and 'me first' attitude.

Your impression is indeed not correct.

There is no prohibition against trading or waiving the player (other than any NTC/NMC the player may have) and no requirement that the player remain on the roster.

There are, however, some add'l waiver requirements before the player can be traded - see below.

And I might pre-preemptively stamp out this common bit of CBA misinformation - if the Blues had put in a claim, they would have had no special priority in claiming Svatos. A team that loses a player on waivers has no special priority in re-claiming the player if he subsequently waived again - waiver priority is always solely based on the standings (either current or past seasons).

Not quite right.

A team can trade a player claimed on waivers (other than under 13.23, the Nabby Rule(*)) without putting them back on waivers - however, they must first offer the player at Waiver price to any team which put in a (lower priority, unsuccessful) claim when he was originally claimed by that team. This restriction is in place for the remainder of the season in which he was claimed.

(*) Article 13.23 supersedes the normal waiver rules and requires clearing full Regular Waivers before a trade.

One gray area, discussed in the Nabby threads, is if a team claims a player under 13.23 and later that season tries to trade him - whether both 13.20(b) & 13.23 are in force or only 13.23 - whether there are two rounds of waivers (the first only for teams with unsuccessful claims) or just one.

Very easily, from my viewpoint.

He has no true desire to play NHL hockey.
