The rangers might throw a guy like Christensen in the deal (no idea why anyone would want him). Gilroy might also be packaged b/c he's a RFA this summer and he's not worth the amt he has to be qualified at. Only way he's back in NY is if he signs extension for less money.
There's no way the Rangers are trading MDZ for a 35yr old rental. I get that McCabe is still a decent dman & has great shot. But he could walk away from the NYR in 4 months as a UFA. Nothing substantial should be traded for him. It's not like the Rangers are one piece away from a Cup contender anyways
But really, it makes no sense to take Gilroy. We just acquired Sulzer for a conditional 7th yesterday. There's little need for a D man here. Mike Weaver and Jason Garrison have both been good; they're cheap and under contract next year. Kulikov is a stud. Ellerby is top 6 material for us next year. Gudbranson will be signed in the offseason, and should have a chance to make the team. Sulzer can be re-signed for cheap, and fill a role. This doesn't even include Dennis Wideman, and a bad contract in Bryan Allen, who will play just because of his contract.
We have plenty of defensemen.
Christensen might make some sense, but he doesn't seem like the type of player Tallon likes, so I don't know.
I'd guess the move is just for picks, to be honest.
Probably will involve Anisimov or a Horak/Werek/Thomas type player, unfortunately. I don't think you can trade spare parts for a top 4 d-man, but heres to hoping I'm wrong. I wouldn't trade any of those guys for McCabe.
I laughed out loud. An up and coming 60 point selke candidate and a very good prospect for McCabe?
