Postscript: Dan Snyder

From the AP report on the burial Friday of Dan Snyder:

Graham Snyder read a statement after the service attended by players and hundreds of others in Elmira, 70 miles from Toronto.

``We are all human beings and human beings make mistakes,'' Snyder said in an even voice. ``We want you to know we do not lay blame on Dany Heatley for the accident that took our son from us."

Such a good and courageous man. May his message never be forgotten.

That's Beautiful. It's funny how people who KNOW Snyder can find it in them to forgive Heatley, but other people who don't know either of them, are going to hold this against him for the rest of his life.

Here is what he said.

"We are all human beings and we know that humans make mistakes... We want you to know that we do not lay blame on Dany Heatley for the accident that took our son from us. Dany is a good person and no one feels more sorry for what happened than he does... Forgiveness is also a part of being human and we know there is nothing to gain from harbouring resentment or anger towards others. We are here to support him (Heatley) through this difficult time and know that he, too, is hurting so much"

He also said they didn't wish for Heatly going to jail, that nothing would be gained by it.

Well then, I guess many drunken drivers who run over some poor soul should not go to the slammer, because after all, theres "nothing to be gained by it".
Suffice to say, I disagree.
How bout deterence.

There is a big difference between a drunken driver and Heatly's situation.

Mr. Synder did a very human thing by doing that.

A classy and charitable gesture by Mr. Snyder, but do you suppose the relatives of a pedestrian on the street or sidewalk, if they had gotten killed, would be just as charitable?

I still hope Heatley gets punished like any Joe Shmoe would for his actions.

Forgiveness is not always an easy trait to have, and for this family to show that much of it is very...oh, how do I say this? Classy isn't the right word, and neither is generous.

Maybe there is no right word...maybe the gesture should just speak for itself.

If one assumes for the moment that Heatly was driving like an idiot, whats the big difference. In fact, one could even logically argue that Heatly would be more culpable.

This is one for my quotations file. Man, you gotta be moved by this ... it's not difficult to see how Dan Snyder was so well respected with a father (and I'm sure a mother no different in character) like that.
