There may be lots of teams that need to clear salary, but nobody here knows who those players are going to be, and whether or not they fit our profile of needs. "Setting the table" for these moves is completely overrated, you've gotta build with what you have, and if a team-changing player becomes available, you adjust accordingly. Having Clarke MacArthur at $2.5m isn't going to prevent you from adding a more valuable player.
C-Mac trade value might go up but it wouldn't be till next years deadline. If I was betting man I wouldn't count on it. His value on the trade market will definitely decrease after the playoffs and most likely not increase until next years deadline.

The one time of the year that GMs make their biggest overpayments is the deadline and if Burke can extract a huge bounty from a team he has to take it. This year there is a very limited supply of sellers) and a lot of demand in buyers which makes moving C-Mac a very good option.

At the draft/July 1st teams aren't going to overpay for C-Mac whose full cap hit they'll have to pay for the following season, have hopes for internal candidates or can find a supply of 2nd line wingers via free agency like Ryder, Upshall, etc.

Nobody here does know for sure what players will be moved but Burke and Company get paid big dollars to identify not only there own teams strengths and weaknesses but those of other teams to try and find teams they can work with on deals.

-Like everybody knew Boston needed a PMD for its powerplay and had draft picks/prospects to spare
-Like everybody knew Anahiem needed a top 4 dman
-Like everybody knew Dallas needed a Dman and Pittsburgh were deep on the blueline and needed a winger

Heading into this offseason even as just a regular Joe Fan who doesn't get paid anything you can analyze the market but not nearly to the extent of people are paid big dollars and have relationships with other teams:

-Like everybody knows San Jose needs to allocate some more money to there blueline next year. Which will probably mean a forward getting moved out most likely Pavelski
-Like everybody knows Philly needs to clear out some bodies to get under the cap for next year. Not sure which players yet but you can make some estimated guesses of which high salary guys will and won't get moved out
-Like everybody knows Florida will barely spend above the cap floor and are looking for picks/cheap young players for Weiss

So you can bet Burke is doing projections on teams heading into the draft/free agency and chatting about there needs/wants.

So what if it's at next year's deadline? The guy is a valuable player for us next year.

The deadline is the best time to trade players for picks if you don't care about winning that year, but by that logic we should trade the entire team for picks, then hope to replace them in the offseason by trading those picks. The reason you don't see this happen, is because many teams have chemistry that they want to build around for next year. Mac-Grabo-Kulemin definitely have that chemistry.

Even Burke doesn't know exactly who's going to get moved, the cap is going up which could ease the pressure on a ton of teams with established contracts. Meanwhile, the players you're talking about (Paveski, Weiss) have absolutely no bearing on MacArthur. They'd be acquired to be #1 centres with Phil Kessel, and have cap hits that would allow us to spend even $3.5m on MacArthur quite easily. Realistically, the only way Mac doesn't hold more value to us is if we are trading Grabovski. The only way it makes sense to trade Grabovski is if a bonafide #1 centre (i.e. better than Pavelski/Weiss) is coming in return.

You've gotta build with what we have and what the realistic available players are. With that in mind, MacArthur is a very good fit because there isn't a realistic scenario where we break up Mac-Grabo-Kulemin next year. The only realistic scenario where it makes sense to do that is if we get a bonafide #1C.

MacArthur certainly hasn't done much in the past 20 games.

Gotta love the buy low, sell high mentality, but c'mon... He's a 3rd liner on most good teams.

with the amount of trades that have happened pre trade deadline this year I'd say its fair to question any rumor of a major media outlet at this point

they are so pot committed to the deadline they need to ensure fans are still interested on the 28th

Third liners don't score like he has. The guy put up great numbers in third line roles before. He was due to get more minutes and he had capitalized big-time.
