look at Tomas Flischmann, he sucked 4 the capitals, then he moves to the Avs and starts scoring (untill his injury) but the point is a move must motivate players
if you hate Connolly, you probably won't be a big Boyes fan...
I don't think anyone expects a tough, gritty, corner-grinder. If he can reclaim any of his scoring touch with a change of scenery, it'd be a huge plus. At worst, the Sabres spin off Connolly tomorrow to get a second rounder back, meaning we essentially swapped Tim for Boyes (with Boyes having an extra contract year). That still leaves the Sabres in good position in the offseason for bigger moves at center.

He's been getting points too lately, 26p in last 29gp

Thats the key... otherwise he's just another inconsistent forward on a team of inconsistent forwards.
Blues fan here. He has been a solid assist man this year and that is absolutely it. Won't battle for pucks, won't play physical and forgot how to score. Also, his misses the net more than anyone on our team. Again, can pass and that's it. Good luck with him. and the rest of the season.
Dream scenario for next year: another top 6 center is acquired and Connolly walks leaving New Guy and Roy as the top 2 centers and letting Boyes play on the wing.
Falls to #3 on the RW depth chart. At 4 million, that's absurd.
Didn't help a STL team starved for offense; can he really help ours?
Might not be a rental, but it's a short lease. Not a long term solution.
I guess the strategy is to plug him in at center and see what transpires? I don't know. When the euphoria of Regier actually making a trade subsides, I think we'll see that this trade appears more like a short term fix than a first, bold step towards winning a cup.

which would essentially be the same as signing Connolly to a 1 yr extension for 4 million per.
look i like the deal. low cost, potentially high return... but Sabres fans need to realize that Boyes is a goal scoring Tim Connolly

It's better than the non-goal scoring Tim Connolly...
If Darcy thinks he's got something with this guy, good. The only thing I worry about is if he's another sucktastic deadline pickup is that his salary takes away from the dumptruck full of money they are going to need to sign a big name UFA center/defenseman/whatever. But at least Regier is showing he's willing to be active here with the "shackles off", which I like.

And I hope I'm way off base.
Seems like a trade that can't bite Darcy too much when you weigh the variables like that.

Except not really. You're taking the chance that the guy turns his game around with a change of scenery (which is the same thing Connolly may do somewhere else). On paper they look alike, but maybe, just maybe, this turns out to be a better fit. If not, you're not any worse off. If he does, goodie.

Could very well be that it's a bridge to Kassian and Adam being NHL top 6ers.
Have Boyes in place for next year when Kassian almost certainly won't be top 6 ready, and when Adam might only be ready for part-time callup duty.
Then, when his contract expires, we have NHL-caliber talent ready to take his place.
