Mike Gillis isn't a kneejerk type GM. He's not stupid, he's not unaware of Lapierre's downside/reputation but obviously he feels like he has the leadership group to set him straight. Its now on Lapierre to realize this is his third team in a short period of time so if he doesn't get with the program, he's not going to have a NHL career.

Basically if you're Mike Gillis, you'd rather have a Reasoner but that obviously wasn't possible so you're semi-comfortable with Hodgson in the role. If you're willing to go with Hodgson, there's no risk involved with Lapierre. If he doesn't work in that role, you turf him and go with Hodgson.
You mean just ferraro lol

Lapierre hits everything that moves, skates like the wind, works hard and can actually win in the faceoff circle(53.4% on 133 faceoffs). I think AV can get him to keep his actions reasonably in line, but I think this may also be a move to take some of that "agitating" pressure off of Burrows and Kesler. Let them focus on scoring, let Lapierre focus on getting other teams off their game.

A good physical presence who can actually handle some minutes(averaged 11:34 TOI to this point) instead of the usual 5-a-game our 4th line gets. Nice pickup. Losing a 3rd sucks, but getting Lapierre(an RFA) and a middle-ish prospect for a 3rd plus Perreault is a nice return. You hope a 3rd turns out like Lapierre.

Ferraro clearly hates the guy, and probably with good reason. It's been Lapierre's game to get under the skin of anyone and everyone.

I watch a lot of Ducks games and he's really been a non-factor. His forechecking is a big asset, but he screws up on that a lot too. Maybe AV can tune him up a bit.

only problem is that it's clear the team are really trying to fleece the Canucks. or play hardball.

The return on Lapierre to Montreal was Festerling.

Lapierre's last chance on a winning team, playing with former teammates and former coach. He's our new Cooke/Ruutu. He's decent on the dot too, (53.4% so far this year) so I figure he'll be centre.

Assuming those moves, the #nhl #canucks come in something like $950.00 under their daily upper limit.

Why would anyone do any favours for the best team in the league?

Nah, all the CBC guys like Milbury, Hrudey, Healey, and Stock were all very negative on the move.

Stock covers Montreal closely and was really negative about how teammates grew to hate him because he stirred **** up and they had to back it up for him. He did admit that Lapierre has more upside then that and hopefully the guys like Burrows and Kesler can get through to him.

Ferraro just said Vancouver was a winner from the trade deadline.

The CBC guys are all just jealous Leafs fans.

Lapierre is also only 25, and I believe still RFA-eligible; so this is not a 3rd rounder for a rental. Perreault is **** anyways.

I agree that I would have preferred to pay a 4th round pick at best but we filled a need so if we had to bump a 4th round pick up to a 3rd round pick then whatever.

The way I see it I wouldn't be surprised to see us get a pick for the negotiating rights to either Bieksa or Ehrhoff. We should be able to get a 3rd round pick which will help offset the pick we lose in this trade.

It's not about doing favors but there still seems to be "old boys club" type of mentality. Seems like the returns on some other players seems to be a little less.

Sportsnet was pretty sour on it too. They think Lapierre is a bit uncoachable, doesn't respond well to discipline and don't think he'll fit in with the grand plan AV and MG have gotten the likes of Kesler and Burrows to buy into.

Although if Burrows, one of the league's most hated pests prior to this season, can turn a new leaf I'd imagine Lapierre could too.

Yep. So if Lapierre is really serious about his career, he'll do whatever is asked of him and try like hell to stick around.

Lets hope he can buy in.. but i'm pretty confident in MG.

AV coached him for 2 years so he must have seen some coachability with max.

I can see him becoming a fan favourite very quickly.

The one guy who seemed to really like the move was McGuire; he covered the Habs/Caps playoff series last year, and said Lapierre was lights-out in a shut-down capacity. McGuire did say Lapierre was nearing the 'end of the road' as far as NHL chances if he didn't start buying into a system though.

90th overall is only one spot away from a fourth anyways.

The best thing about these moves is that even if neither of these guys panned out the the worst that's going to happen is they'll motivate other players to step up.

Raymond should be worried about his role on the team now that a potential guy could come in and take his spot in Higgins (albeit unlikely) and guys like Oreo and Hodgson are wondering how they'll be able to stay on the roster without improving.
