Higgins

For what it's worth, I'm in Calgary and obviously work with a bunch of Flames fans. A lot of guys saying they wish they never got rid of him in Calgary and he should be good for Van around the office today.

Pretty solid deal for Higgins too. I basically see him as playing a role similar to Torres unless Raymond doesn't bump the slump, in which case he's probably as close to a top-6 forward as the Canucks were reasonably gonna get.

Anyone know if Higgins and Lapierre were linemates at any point in Montreal?

wait, so did Oberg have value? or did Gillis just need to move a contract?

I don't know, but his stock was rapidly falling so I'm just glad we got a real NHLer for him.

Would have prefered Reasoner but Higgins and Lapierre are 2 solid moves. The Canucks depth through 4 lines, on defense and in goal is about as good as you'll ever see.

The only thing better than seeing the Canucks address their needs is watching their competition in the West stand pat for the most. The West is as wide open as it's ever been...

22 Sedin---33 Sedin---14 Burrows

Higgins---17 Kesler---26 Samuelsson

21 Raymond---27 Malhotra---13 Torres

15 Glass---Lapierre---36 Hansen

Really happy with this pickup. Love the speed and he solves several minor issues for us - adds some scoring depth to the bottom 6 and can sub in with Kesler if Raymond continues to struggle.

I'm assuming we gave up a 2011 3rd round pick?

Don't know why the titles are incorrect, but these are the tweets that came out:

Ducks send Max Lapierre to Canucks along with a prospect in exchange for third-rounder in 2012 plus Joel Perreault

Chris Higgins goes from Florida to Vancouver for a third-round pick in 2013 and prospect Evan Oberg

And Gillis just said that he's confident he can get something like those back with some other stuff he has in mind.

Higgins is a good versatile guy who has shown some offensive capabilities. He can, hopefully, at the very least be a solid utility-type player, kind of like Pyatt when he was here.

If so then good for him, but man that has the potential to be a trainwreck.
I can't believe Tallon got such a small return on these three veteran defensemen. How is an over-the-hill Samsonov going to help Florida?

He's got a lot more speed than Pyatt, he's more like Hansen than Pyatt.

Higgins has speed, and some hands, and is a good PKer.

A lot of bonuses he'll never hit, though. He's 6-900k in the NHL, and 60-someodd thousand in the AHL.

Non-displaced fracture of his thumb or something. Gillis says it's not a big deal and he'll be playing soon but doesn't want to get too specific until Canuck docs take a look at him.

Funny how things turned out. After watching After Hours I was positive that Gillis was going to do something.

Yup, I know. I didn't compare their skill set; the comparison to Pyatt referred the role he could end up playing on this team, a sort of utility guy that can play in different situations, like Pyatt.

good deal versatile player that can play up/down the lineup. another pk presence. he's got a goal's scorers touch. if raymond falters, higgins can be in that lw position with kes/sammy. kudos to gillis without touching the current roster.

Another solid deal for the Canucks and Gillis. Pretty damn happy about what he was able to accomplish today. Makes us a very deep and well-rounded team.

Neither of these guys - especially traded-every-six-months Lapierre - strike me as particularly useful guys and especially not as AV kinda guys.

But it's not like the price was high, so I guess it's worth a roll of the dice...
