ok, i've had a night to sleep on the draft lottery, and disappointment aside, i've come to one conclusion:
crosby was the only player that likely would have made a significant difference for us THIS year.
as is, we're not going to be a playoff team, and depending on what happens with free agency and our young players, chances are we're going to be near the bottom of the league this season. and for that i'm glad.
so what i would like is some information on phil kessel. what kind of player is he? could he become better than crosby? what are his weaknesses if any?
beyond kessel, who are the other early top favorites? i'm just trying to get an idea of who we could be adding next year.
the team is going to be so bad this year i think we will have a shot at Kessel. Just from what I saw at the WJC I was very impressed, especially considering he was a few years younger than almost everyone else.
I wouldnt jump the gun and declare that the Rangers will be terrible this year... This season is going to be very weird and the roster can look quite different than what any of us may envision.
As far as Kessel is concerned, before the lottery I had visions of us grabbing Johnson this year and Kessel next, building up solid American born talent at every position (it worked for us in the past). Kessel reminds me alot of Pavel Bure, absolute rocket on his skates with great hands around the net. He wont ever become the all around player that Crosby will, but I think he has the talent to rival him on the scoresheet year in and year out.
Didn't Kessel outscore Crosby at the recent WJC's? Kessel is a game changer, regardless of comparisons to Crosby. That is all you need to know. He's alot like Kariya.
Phil played at U-18 and Crosby played at U-20. But I agree, he can take over a game and change it with a flick of his wrist. He is like those diminutive stars (Bure, Kariya) that can dominate a game at will.
