Both are 1990's, aka Eric Wellwood's class from 2008 (even though Wellwood was taken in 2009).

Good for Akeson. Theres a thread on the prospects board about him, hes a good player and plays like Giroux kinda except more of a playmaker.

why wasn't akeson drafted? what's his potential? i saw that he's ranked higher than landeskog on tsn.ca. could this deal have been in place which made homer more comfortable moving chaput?

Just looking at the stats, Jason Akeson has pretty much been a PPG player the past 3 years with 20+ goal campaigns each year, so it isn't entirely that he his playing against players that are 5 years younger than him. However, he exploded in 2010-2011 with 103. He also had a good playoffs with 19pts in 20 games last year. Hopefully both his and Tyler Brown's point production can translate to the AHL, then the NHL within 3 years.

I know elzippo about either guy but holy smokes this Akeson dude can put up the points. I assume these will be the same kind of contracts given to Pither and company last year (entry levels beginning next year).

Akeson leads the OHL in assists by a whopping 13.

Akeson looks pretty cool....

Edit: Just looked up the stats. He leads the OHL with 103 pts compared to Toffoli in 2nd with 95. Very impressive, but I have to remind myself that Luke Pither was 3rd in scoring behind Hall and Seguin last year.

Off topic, but why does everyone seem to want Da Costa? What's so special about him?

Not to be a negative Nelly, but Pither had over a ppg 2 playoff years in a row and he isn't lighting it up. Hopefully this guy adapts to the pro game better.

Pither has looked better recently, but laziness on the defensive end has limited his playing time early on.

I'm not saying he is bad, but it's easy to look at junior numbers and get really excited about a players pro potential. The first 2 guys in the OHL in scoring from last year are doing a tad better than the third guy.

You guys grabbed a good one in Akeson. He's tiny but he has all the skill and speed needed to overcome his disadvantages.

Just go to the Kitchener Rangers web site and check out any highlight package. He's a fantastic playmaker.

Good signing, but be careful about overage OHL players putting up a ton of points. Doesn't always translate to the next level.

I scrolled a bit through Brock's Blog:

January 2011:

Quote:
9. Jason Akeson - Kitchener Rangers
As mentioned, no overager has ever won this award [Rod Tilson Award]. But Akeson has been sensational all season long for Kitchener. The team needed offensive players to step up when it was learned that Skinner and Morin wouldn't be coming back. Akeson was that guy. The team needed someone to keep the offense going when Gabriel Landeskog was out with an ankle injury (and at the WJC's). Akeson was that guy. He's been a consistent offensive performer this season and along with Parks, has to be the top contender for the Leo Lalonde Trophy, at the very least.
October 2009:

Quote:
Jason Akeson (2010, but 1990 born)
Akeson is another guy I really like as a player. I was kind of disappointed no one took a chance on him at the 2009 NHL Draft, but he's had an explosive start to the season. I think he's a really smart player and the majority of his success comes from his elite hockey sense. As a result of being smart with the puck, he is an excellent playmaker who does a good job at finding his teammates in strong scoring positions. He made be a tad undersized (5'10ish), but he competes and isn't afraid of the danger areas. Nice to see Akeson and his former teammate Eric O'Dell in the top 10 of OHL scoring. Both were hesitant to join the OHL over the NCAA route and leave their Cumberland CJHL team in 2008. But it's worked out well for both of them thus far I would say. Akeson finished with an assist.
April 2009:

Quote:
4. Jason Akeson - Kitchener Rangers
Akeson is actually an interesting story. Last season he played for Cumberland Tier 2 and was having a successful season playing with linemmate Eric O'Dell. However just after midseason, his linemmate decided to jump ship to the OHL and had oustanding success with Sudbury, leading to a draft selection in the 2nd round. Trying to prove that he wasn't exactly chopped liver, Akeson also jumped ship late last season to Kitchener, however due to the teams depth, he wasn't really able to contribute much offensively. This season has been a different story, as Akeson finished the season 2nd in scoring in Kitchener. He has elite on ice vision and is an outstanding playmaker. He is able to slow the game down in the offensive zone and has no problem working the danger areas at only 5'10, 190lbs. His size doesn't really hurt him either, as he has excellent lower body strength and works the cycle fairly effectively. He's also a good skater. I think that this guy will continue to get better and better in this league and it'd probably be in some NHL teams best interest to claim his rights sooner rather than later. As a 1990, this is really his first full season in the OHL.
November 2008:

Quote:
Jason Akeson (2009 NHL Draft Eligible, 1990 born)

Akeson is a very interesting case. He came to the Rangers late last season after coming over from Tier 2, Junior A Cumberland, giving up his NCAA eligibility. He decided to leave after linemate Eric O'Dell left Cumberland for Sudbury and began having some serious success. But Akeson was joining a very deep Kitchener team and saw very little ice time, although he did play in a vast majority of the Memorial Cup games. With some key departures, more was to be expected of Akeson this season. From what I've heard, he's been up and down. Invisible one game, very good the next. He was very good in this game against Niagara. He looked very comfortable creating offense once inside the offensive zone and ended up finishing the game with a goal and an assist. The assist was on a very nice play where he won possession behind the net and made a great pass to a teammate infront of the net for the goal. Looks to be a smart offensive player who can create offense. I'm interested to see how he finishes the year and whether he manages to get on any draft lists this year.

Do any of our OHL followers have realistic potential predictions for these guys?
