NCAA Free Agents

With the Habs dipping into the NCAA free agent pool the last few years (ex. Trotter, Bishop, Nash) who are the top free agents this year and who would you go after if you were the Habs?

David Clarkson was picked up as a free agent by Jersey so some players do make it.

edit: Also, Dave Jarman is an interesting player. Second leading scorer (behind Nick Johnson) on his team last year while winning the NCAA's "best defensive forward" award. He's in the ECHL right now, I think, which isn't an unusual first step for surprise players nowadays. Not as under-sized as some NCAA scoring heros sometimes are, either.

edit 2:Just to list a few more names from NCAA:
Stephan Da Costa
Adam Estoclet (needs muscle mass in a bad way)
Scott Fleming (Dartmouth's captain)
Brian Flynn
Mario Valery-Trabucco (don't consider him an option, but scores fairly often in the SM-Liiga these days)
Justin Fontaine (not big/strong enough, but consistent)
Cameron Burt Listed as a C/D??

That's all I'm digging up right now. I'm too damn hungry.

There are plenty of former NCAA free agents around the league that make a difference on their respective teams.

Just because 95% of the people on these boards know nothing about these prospects (myself included), doesn't mean that they are pointless to look at.

Thats exactly what these threads are for. To inform people who don't have the means to keep up with the NCAA.

Most of the top Q scorers weren't drafted :

Philippe-Michael Devos
Gabriel Lévesque
Ryan Kavanagh
Jonathan Audy-Marchessault
Etienne Brodeur
Guillaume Asselin
Alex Saulnier
Allain Saulnier

Any opinions on these players? Any other players from the Q that could be interesting?

Phillips will be a late 1st or early 2nd round pick at the next draft.

I love that thread. Though I haven't had a chance to look at it that much this year, I'll make some research and come back to it.

I know though that some players can make a difference. As Montreal know, I was really high on Brad Thiessen. Guess who has the best GAA of the whole AHL right now. Might not mean that it will translate in the NHL, but I surely would mean that our AHL team would be in good hands, not that Sanford isn't a good goalie but with the injuries he seems to be having, with Delmas and Mayer that are not that reliable and depending what's the plans for McIntyre, I would concentrate our efforts in goaltending in the NCAA.

But I will come back with other names than the only already mentioned. I had already talked about Da Costa last year. The Connolly's, Polacek, Vaughan etc....But there are others. But the Habs HAVE to get more interesting UFA's than the ones we got. I mean, we all know how much interest we have over there, yet, we miss on a guy like Bozak and end up with Trotter....Not exactly a bad pick, but not at Bozak level either. We need to do better especially when we know how much time that is spend over there....To me, at the time, Thiessen was a MUST and can't miss Pro (again, maybe not NHL but you never know...). Not sure why we didn't made the best push for him especially when they had the chance to see him play while watching Quailer's progression.

Talking about NU....I know, they are not big. But I think highly of McLeod and McNeely. Good and interesting players that might have a fine Pro upside.

I would like to give a try-out to Alexandre Grenier of Quebec. 6"5 200lbs forward who's playing his first yr in the Q at 19. late bloomer , never played midjetAAA and was playing JR AAA until he got call up by the Rempart this year.

As it was said, Habs signed few NCAA UFAs in the last years. But, Gauthier signed two of the four Montreal named (Nash and Bishop) last year. I think PG will target more of that kind of player in the following years, especially with Habs taking a lot of Hamilton's players this season and because he is a former scout
