My 2011-2012 Buffalo Sabres

What would your team, realistically, look like after this season?

Here is mine:

Starting cap hit for next year: $40,842,024

WALK Connolly
WALK Grier
WALK SpecialNeids
WALK Butler
WALK Lalime

Acquisitions:
Richards 7.5 per
FA Defensemen? 3.5 per
= +11 million

Extensions:

Stafford 4.0 per
Mccormick .750 per
Weber 1.0 per
Montador 1.75 per
= +7.5 million

Acquisitions: +11 million
Extensions: +7.5 million
= +18.5 million

Final Cap Hit: $59,342,024

Leaving about $57,000 in cap space.. a nice chunk of change for the Pegula daughters to blow at the Galleria.

**Let Hecht, Gaustad, Morrison (possibly Boyes) walk next year and bring up the young guys to make room for the long term contracts of Myers/Ennis/Kaleta**

The Line-up:

Vanek-Richards-Boyes
Stafford-Roy-Pominville
Ennis-Hecht-Kassian
Kaleta-Gaustad-McCormick
Gerbe/Adam

Leopold-Morrisonn
Myers-FA Dman
Montador-Weber
Sekera

Miller
Enroth

STACKED.

Letting Butler walk is no more and no less than squandering an asset.

Good point.

I stopped after Butler

Maybe instead of the pipe dream of 3M Ehrhoff, have Morrisson/Sekera/Butler fight it out for 5/6/7 and go from there.

Ehrhoff at 3 million will never happen, that's just completely off base. Letting Sekera walk would be awfully stupid too imo. McNabb being the 7th defenseman also has ~ 0% chance of happening, they'd be far better off resigning Butler to be the 7th and letting McNabb develop. There are plenty of defensemen in the system ahead of McNabb as well at this point.

Lmao.. good catch. I think I had another player there at some point as I threw this together a few days ago. Clearly, he wouldn't take a 100K pay cut

let's just say i'd probably soil myself if this was our team next year...making it unlikely.

This was more to show where we are at, cap-wise, assuming the raises to the players that deserve it.

Do you think I'd honestly believe we'd fall within 100K of the cap limit??

It's hilarious to see people do a COMPLETE 180 on Sekera after two good games. Connolly played two good games this year, too

It doesn't matter if he'll play for cheap.. when it comes down to it, he's a liability.

With Pegula heading the team, I don't see why that's an impossibility.

Richards and Ehrhoff is far more unlikely than the budget of the team you put forward.

180 on Sekera after two games? Have you watched this season? If anything, people will be more sour on Sekera based on the last month or so compared to the season's balance.

Sekera has had many more good games then bad. It seems like some people do a complete 180 after a few bad games.

If we could have Sekera play wing I'd be 100% for it. But on the back end? No thanks.

So is pretty much every other defenseman on the team. Sekera is still young, cheap, and has plenty of upside. There's no way I'd let him go at this point, especially when the team is long on quantity and short on quality on the blueline.

I have ZERO interest in Sekera playing forward. He's lost in the offensive zone more often than not, especially when he gets below the circles.

Sekera's been great for most of the year. Big step forward for him this year, his struggles in the last month and all. No interest in letting him walk. What this team needs is a Tony Lydman type, in fact actual Tony Lydman would have been really nice.

Idk who I was thinking of in regards to Ehrhoff, because it just doesn't add up $$ wise. Like I said, obviously he wouldn't sign on for 100K less than he's making now lol. I'd like to see McNabb up for his 10 games, like Myers.. that is possible, right? Not exactly sure how it works. The guy has 63 points in 50 games this year and he's a +23!

McNabb will be in the AHL next year. The 10-game thing is only for players who aren't AHL eligible, but he is, so he can stay up as long as he wants or get sent down and get called up later.

And McNabb, unlike Myers, is a poor skater, and that will keep him from jumping straight to the NHL.

In Juniors.

One only has to look at the drop in Ennis's and Gerbe's numbers from the AHL (a much better league) to the NHL to see that just looking at junior players numbers to judge readiness is absurd.

IF IF IF our defense next Season consisted of:

Myers
Montador
Leopold
Sekera
Morrisonn
Weber

With Butler being the 7th ... Is that defense sooooooooo terrible? Of course it's not "cream of the crop". But I think if you had to choose upgrading defense or offense, I think our offense is much worse than our defense, plus if Lalime leaves I think Enroth will be the backup so that takes care of that. What is the weak link (if you can only choose one) at those 6 starting defenseman?

I don't particularly like Morrisson's game.

In fact, if Butler continues his steady play alongside Myers, I'd rather have him in the top 6 than Morrisson.
