I thought of this idea elsewhere a while ago so I decided to bring it to HF.
Although some heads were scratching at the time, I think that the Meszaros trade was worth the draft pick given up. He's helping by taking minutes off Chris Pronger and Kimmo Timonen and generally bolstering our defence (usually being the 3rd or 4th best D-man on the team; definitely better than Coburn).
On the O-side, he gets points and scores clutch goals (could be very good in the playoffs in tight situations). Plus, he`s still young, only 25. His large salary is a bit unfortunate but it's not like we signed him to the contract to begin with.
I'm happy, to tell you the truth I was a big fan of his while he was in Ottawa.
Looking at is as a hockey deal, with out of context of other events, the value was pretty good for us. His cap hit and who left the team to make room for him take some of the luster off of it, but its still a decent deal I guess. Its looking like a smarter move in hindsight than I gave Holmgren credit for at the time.
For serious? Hartnell's been a main cog on two of the most important lines this team has seen this year (HBL and, more recently, that stint with Carter and Roo, where he only reinforced the importance of his role and highlighted the plain awesome ability it has of being able to be plugged in with anyone and work the same way).
I still don't like the idea of them acquiring a $4M defenseman for the third pairing and I don't think he is worth his cap hit.

Yes. He is playing well, but his success is from playing gainst weak competition. He is clearly benefiting from being on a deep team. I think he'd struggle the way he did before if he is supposed to be a go to guy on defense.
