The trade you're happy didn't worked out

Habs fan here,

Not sure if it's old news, but I personnally learned it this morning from our play-by-play guy on the radio. Seems that when Jacques Martin was the GM, 08-09 season, he concluded a deal that was final. The only thing needed was the Panthers president approval. Flyers had accepted it.

The deal was: Bouwmeester and Anderson for 3 players, 2 of which were Biron and....Claude Giroux. Martin went to the Pres who rejected it. Remember that was the year when both Bouwmeester and Anderson were to be UFA's....

Would have been great for Florida for once. Not sure how Bouwmeester would have develop under a Flyers system but that would have been an incredible loss for the Flyers....

When we say that sometimes, the best deals are the ones that do not happen....

All indications out of Philly were that Martin asked for Giroux, and Holmgren wouldn't give him up

Flyers were not giving up Giroux in the deal, I think it was reversed. A deal was ok'd by Fla to move Anderson and Bouwmeester but Philly did not want to part with Giroux in the deal. Thank goodness too, Bouwmeester is a bum. Never wanted him to begin with, there are at least 15-20 other guys in the NHL who I would trade for before Bouwmeester.

Bouwmeester is a glorified Coburn. Size and Speed is great, but everything else is underwhelming. Not worth twice Coburn's money...

Yet, the story here is that this is why Martin became the Habs coach. When the Pres put his veto on it, Martin went to him and said that if he was not good enough to do the job, he might as well move on.

In all honesty, I am talking about a play-by-play guy who doesn't have the reputation of inventing things contrary to most journalists we have out here...

Everything need to be taken in context here. We shouldn't look it as we see it now. Everybody at the time still believed that the only thing Bouwmeester needed was to get out of Florida. And while we all knew the kind of talent he had, nobody knew Giroux's progression would be so fast and solid.

I am glad we didnt sign Bouwmeester when he was UFA. He was overrated at the time and still is.

When Boumeester and Pitkanen were drafted, the talking heads said future Norris races would come down to these two players

I don't believe for a second that Giroux has ever been on the table.

No kidding.

Along the same lines, what about all the hair-pulling over all the UFA goalies last summer that Homer didn't sign? Ellis, Mason, Turco, Nabokov...the only guy out of the FA crop who's worked out is Niemi. And I'm not in love with what San Jose gave him in that extension either.

Don't lump everyone in on the love for Bouwmeester. And as far as Giroux, people had seen enough of him to understand that he was a terrific find at the 22nd pick. People knew Bouwmeester was soft, and people knew that Giroux was able to put on a clinic in the postseason after his QMJHL performances.

Just how does the Habs play by play guy have this and noboby in Philly ever got the story or anyone in Florida, TSN, SPortsnet, Hockeybuzz, The Score, NBC, ESPN, Versus, bloggers, etc! I trust the French Media has it and everyone else missed. Living in Ottawa and listening to MOntreal sports radio every morning, it is clear that Martin is a big talker and would give that tidbit to the media.....NOT!

Habs fan - go back and check the tapes, I DOUBT your guy said it like that!!! I am sure He was getting approval to make that "offer" and it was not approved.

I don't care what the numbers say, I'm still not totally comfortable going to war with Boucher and Bobrovsky(for now).

I agree. His star is still rising. His ceiling is high.

You don't dump that for a D-man nearing the end of his contract.

Pierre Lebrun did report at the time that the Flyers came close to acquiring Bouwmeester, but the Panthers decided to hang onto him. He never mentioned what the Flyers would be sending to Florida though.

I'm not either...but I'd be more uncomfortable with Turco, Ellis, or Mason.

I do wish they'd gone after Roloson, either last year or this...ah well.

I wanted Homer to sign Turco at July 1st (and Leighton never getting extension). Good that they stayed away from Turco.
