Allentown Arena will be the Phantoms new home

Per Frank Seravalli

Quote:
Allentown mayor confirms plans for Allentown arena which will be the new home of the Phantoms.
Quote:
The new Phantoms minor league hockey arena will be the centerpiece of a new Allentown Entertainment District, which Mayor Ed Pawlowski hopes will become an anchor attraction

Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski this morning unveiled plans for a new Allentown Entertainment District, which will include a new arena for the Phantoms minor league hockey team and be overseen by a major development firm.

...

The arena would be the permanent home of the Phantoms, a team that develops players for the Flyers and plays in a league that is one step below the National Hockey League. The team would be the hockey equivalent of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, a feeder team for the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Brooks Group of Pittsburgh, which owns the Phantoms, chose Allentown as the new location for the team after its previous home, the Spectrum in Philadelphia, was marked for demolition. The Phantoms have been playing in Glens Falls, N.Y., while the owners prepare a permanent home.

Backers of the project said they envision the hockey arena hosting community events such as concerts, ice shows, graduations, trade shows and other events that could attract thousands of people to Allentown's struggling core business district.
Read more about it here

Personally exciting news, that means they're super close. I'd love to go and support them.

Very good news, imo. I've got nothing against the Adirondack area, it was just a temporary solution, but that's a bit of a hike between an NHL club and its AHL affiliate. Especially one that was started in Philly and only left due to the imminent demolition of the Spectrum. Plus, since Allentown is a lot closer maybe the Phantoms will stop by in Philly for more than 1 game a season.

That is good news. It will put them a lot closer to our area. And yes maybe a opportunity to see then live occasionally.

Congrats on the placement. As a Penguins fan it'll nice to see the tri-region AHL rivalry be renewed. It has inevitably lost a bit of the sting with the Phantoms in upstate New York.

It always shocked me how Allentown didn't have a minor league team to begin with...then again I briefly looked at going to school at Lehigh, so I may be biased.

I really wish all this would have happened 10 years ago or so. I grew up in Emmaus, just minutes from the border with Allentown. It would have been nice to get to go see Phantoms games frequently. Now, I'm all grown up and will likely be moving to the first place I get a job offer once I'm done with my final year of college in a few months (just minutes from Hershey, oddly enough). I guess I'll have to sneak away while I'm visiting for the holidays

Allentown Phantoms? I think they need a new name.

Cool, glad that they'll be back in the area. Wonder if they'll be "Allentown" or "Lehigh Valley" in the name.

Why did Comcast sell the Phantoms anyway? Don't like that they're owned by Brooks Orpik.

It will also be nice to have a presence somewhere else in the state, even if it's not far. The Flyers really should have tried to seize the WBS area before the Penguins moved in.

Good to finally get this going in Allentown, because the Phantoms aren't the first hockey team that has tried to be there.

It's barely any different than the Adirondack Phantoms

At the time there was no reason to "seize the WBS area" since they had the Spectrum and, at the time, the Phantoms were one of the top draws in the AHL and there were no discussions of demolishing the Spectrum. Frankly, if the Spectrum was demolished when they built the big house next door, the Bears would probably still be the Flyers AHL affiliate.

I am assuming you are referring to UHL Lehigh Valley Xtreme when you mention that the Phantoms aren't the first team to try hockey out in the area? If so the AHL has much more credibility than the old U-Haul League ever did so assuming that the arena gets off the ground (which still doesn't sound to be a 100% done deal with financing which still has to be approved) I think the team will be a tremendous success, much like the Iron Pigs are.

Allentown Aviators?

Kind of ties in with the Flyers, even though we all know the Flyers have nothing to with planes. Well, everyone except Bob.

Since they didn't change the name when they went to Glens Falls, I would be surprised if they changed the name when they move to the Lehigh Valley. If I had to bet on the name, it will be the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

It doesn't really matter whether it changes or stays the Phantoms. Just as long as they don't get a stupid name like the Allentown Steel or something like that.

The Lehigh Valley Steel would be a fitting name and, honestly, I wouldn't call it stupid. If the Brooks Group cared about creating an identity that would go fit the region, that would be a good one imo. But the Phantoms have some brand recognition and there's no reason to change it at this point.

Awesome, this is so exciting for the Flyers and the American Hockey League, there will be a fun rivalry with Hershey and Wilkes-Barre.

I call it stupid. Just my opinion, I hate singular team names. Like Wild, Avalanche, Crunch, Heat, Rampage etc...
